Hello. I have a 40-HP [Evinrude] Tracker which originally had a VRO system on it. The previous owner removed the VRO so now it takes a fuel-oil mix. The manual says a 100:1 fuel ratio if there is no VRO - does this sound normal?

Thanks!

Do 50:1.

Yes, that does sound normal, but do as Peter suggests and run 50:1 anyway.

OMC switched to a 100:1 ratio for many outboards in the late 1980s but they found that while the motors ran fine on that mix, it left too little residual oil on the cylinder walls for motors that were not run regularly so they reverted to the 50:1 recommendation.

All the older OMC motors with the 100:1 ratio should be run at 50:1 unless they are used daily, or nearly so.

Much appreciated!

Thank you.
