We christened a friends new used boat yesterday taking it offshore. The boat is a custom 2006 Sea Hunter 35 center console powered by twin 275 Verados. The boat handles and rides great (24.5 degrees deadrise at the transom).

Here are some videos of the transit thru Top Sail Inlet ... it is being dredged so we were reading the water more alot than following the markers. Coming across the bar we marked 4.5 feet of water. This inlet has been the location of two capzises in the last month. It can get real sporty for sure.

Please enjoy the videos ......

InterCoastal Waterway (ICW) video ....

Were heading NE toward the Top Sail Beach bridge.

Please excuse the the wind whistle in the background. We were cruising at 46 at 4800 rpms.

How do you safely run a 35' boat in 4.5' of water? Doesn't it draw more than that? Or was that just under the keel? What kind of swell?

Draft on the boats is 32" ... carefully that's why you heard us talking in regards to reading the water. Swell was probably 1 - 2 ft so the reasonable call on depth was more like 5 ft. Folks run that inlet in 25 - 35 foot boats all the time. Local knowledge.

Here's some more video of the a little fishing action and the run from the inlet to the ICW ..... two S-turns (about 1.5 miles thru the marsh grass.

The boy in the video is the owner's son John (12 years old).

Around here, 4.5' is not an inlet....that's a shoal.

Outbound thru the inlet ... a little more docile than in the afternoon. Little wind and incoming tide. We measured 5.4 feet on the bar. Tide was 3 hours from flood stage.

Got this from the Army Corp this morning in regards to moving the buoys and dredging. Ed talked to them after we came thru yesterday afternoon.

"From the head of Navigation from the Army Corps:

We have funding to work until the 15th and certainly will try to open the channel for safer navigation. You have been following along with our weather and sea conditions and there have been challenges out there.

The Coast Guard is also working toward getting the buoys moved, but just in the same breath had safety issues with trying to safely stay on station long enough to remove and relocate buoys.

We performed some survey yesterday, but I haven't seen results.

Thanks for your report. I will pass this along to our operators and again, we will keep working at for as long as we are able.

Roger"

"More data from Roger Bullock.

We assisted the USCG in relocating buoys 1 and 2, and the other buoys are now correct. Our Dredge Fry Captain was on top of the situation to coordinate with the USCG to make the buoys match to deeper water. Captain saw a lot of struggling boaters looking for passage."

There are a number of shallow water inlets in NC just like Top Sail that are marked and maintained by the Corp.

Oregon Inlet

Hatteras Inlet

Bogue Inlet

Carolina Beach Inlet

Lockwood Folley Inlet

Shallotte Inlet

I operate out of Lockwood Folly and also (when the inlet's in a good mood) Shallotte Inlet.

These can be treacherous (especially Shallotte Inlet) because its sometimes hard to see the edges of the channel where it breaks at the bar when surf is kicked up.

It seems the COE Fry and Merrit side casters are out there constantly on the Lockwood side. One week, the buoys will go stright out of the cut, the next couple of weeks, they are either dog boning hard left or hard right.

Shallotte Inlets an entirely different matter, the CG has closed it several times over the years, but the Ocean Isle Beach folks use it regularly. In 25 years, I have never seen the dredges in this inlet, but I have seen commecial ones (Cotrell).

Hil ....

You're correct sir. Shallotte Inlet is not maintained by the Corps. It was dredged about 9 years ago using monies for beach renouishment. The east end of OIB has been falling in the water since 1960 and will continue to do so. Tubbs Inlet is open and can be navigated if you have local knowledge.

Thanks for the vid Tom! Been through that inlet many times. The sand is always shifting. Gotta be careful running that inlet.
