We left Belmont Harbor around 12:30 and headed 4 miles south to downtown Chicago. At the start we had my 1999 Outrage 21, a Nauset, classic Montauk, 1991 17 Outrage, and a new 2009 Dauntless 23. It was a perfect day, sunny with west winds 1-2 footers on Lake Michigan. Chuck's 23 Dauntless and Max's 17 OR and my 21 OR went through the lock and up the Chicago River. Great long, low lines of the new 23 Dauntless with unique split bow rail and the T-top really makes the boat. Max's 1991 is in mint condition and has been in his family since day one. I went through the lock solo, which was a mistake. With the currents in the lock and holding onto one hanging line along the wall, my bow parted from the wall so I pushed off not to ding my prop. Thankfully Max's wife hopped in my boat and we secured ourselves along the wall and waited a few minutes for the lock levels to lower about 5 feet. We cruised up the river about 2 miles and returned back through the lock and out to Lake Michigan. Lots of cruise ship activity that day. It was good seeing a mix of Whalers all in excellent condition. After a brutal spring, summer has finally arrived in Chicago |

Very nice shots. I wish that weather was in NYC this past weekend. |

Beautiful photos. The water looks very clean. Is it? Good advice on not doing locks solo. Reminds me of JM's book Only In America. |

Oh man, I love Chicago! Whaler19 you take me back! Lived there for a couple years, took the kids back there two years ago and went everywhere! I remember every photo taken on the river. And to have your Whaler there too! If you could only get to Wrigley on your Whaler! Pass the Gino's East, please. |

The water does seem clearer this year. I've been anchoring off Montrose Beach (about 5 miles north of downtown) in about 10 feet of water and can easily see my anchor at the bottom...pure sand. I don't remember that from last year. I'm headed up to Door County, WI next week (unfortunately without the boat) and I'll see if you can still see down at least 30+ feet. |

Great pictures. Was in Chicago last week and did the architectural boat tour. |
