Those of you who have built docks for your Whalers (or other watercraft), what can you reccommend as far as types or sources of bumper material. I don't want my Montauk or guests vessels bumping/rubbing against raw wood, but I'd like to get something economical. This is for a fixed freshwater dock made of pressure treated lumber, in an area where the lake rarely freezes (maybe once every 5 -10 years, and only in coves or inlets).

Thanks,
Marsh

Go to your local dump and start pulling tires out of the pile. Cut them in quarters, lay the pieces out flat, and attach.

I've also seen used fire hose used which may look better on your nice dock. Your local fire department may be a resource where that can be aquired.

If you want professional quality, this is what our local dock builder uses:

Or you can use old fire hose, attached every 4-6", and bunched into little "bumps" in between.

Personally, I think the Polyform bumpers on the corners only are adequate. Your boat has fenders, right?

We have used Hamilton Marine in Maine for all our dock supplies. They ship fast.

We used the Dock-pro P-profile edging from TaylorMade, and also their corner bumpers. Put them on 4 years ago with bronze ring-shank nails, and they have held up very well - outdoors 24x7x365 in a salt water environment. I really like the idea of dock wheels too, for the corners, but they're pricey.

I have a roll of old fire hose, and I thought about using that until I did a trial run in the workshop - quite a pain to install, as you need to use screws and it takes a good deal of force to form it into pleats. Also, it does scuff the hull.

Should also have mentioned that the Dock Pro edging is relatively economical - $26 for a 10 foot roll. Some of the others want the same $ for an 18 inch section.

If the dock is covered, carpet will do nicely.
