I was able to briefly look at a 17 outrage the other day, but didn't have enough time to fully examine whether or not this is a true self-bailing hull. From what I saw, it doesn't appear to be.
Can anyone confirm this for me?

If you could explain the criterion for being rated as "true self-bailing" we could perhaps better explain where the Boston Whaler boats fit into the category.

Having a 1991 Outrage 17, it is self draining, while underway. It is not similar to the classic 13, 15 and Montauk, in which you can leave the bilge plug out and only a little bit of water enters.
In addition to the splashwell drains (leave unplugged), there are two deck drains (leave plugged) under the rear quarter seats. Any water that does not pass through the deck drains will go to the bilge via the moulded channel.
On this model, the bilge drain exits down to the keel.

Great, thanks for the info and pics. So in your boat, once deck water has drained into the bilge it exits through the drain hole in the bilge when underway? I was curious when the boat is at rest at the mooring if rain water can drain overboard through a drain hole or scupper.
The boat is great, I love the foward deck and how it is raised more than the 18' outrage. Much better for casting or lounging!

By the way, where are you in Casco Bay area? I'm in Brunswick and go out of Mere Point.

I run with the bilge closed and have a bilge pump set to automatic. It is a very dry ride. My very heavy F115 prevents me from leaving the bilge plug or deck drains open.
If you plan to moor or leave the boat in a slip, I suggest a second dedicated battery for the bilge.
As you know we can get ALOT of rain. I saw a dozen center console boats, including a few Montauk 170's at a marina during our 3 week, 13 inch rain fest. All had drained batteries and had 6" or more of standing water. Scary.
I am in South Portland, near the water and trailer to Bug Light ramp a mile away.

I'll check my boat - 95 OR17. We just spent several hours over a couple of weeks working on the 17. We cleaned up the harnesses and cables, installed the GPS combo, cleaned up the console wiring etc, installed a new bilge pump 1100 GPH and still working on the trailer. My battery is in the console, no main buss switch yet. I've got one plug in the starboard bilge (which I plug) and a plug in forward locker which I leave open. We were in some pretty rough water a few days ago and never took on a drop, bilges entirely dry. I had two on board including my buddy sitting in the starboard rear quarter seat almost snoozing when I asked him to move his 220 lb self to the forward console seat to balance the boat a bit. That 17 is incredible.
In fact, when I drilled the transom for the new transducer the wood was dry as a bone. Pumped copious amounts of 4200 in the holes and on the threads.
I'll get some photos posted asap.

Hey guys,
The '94 and '95 Outrage 17s have self bailing scuppers in place of the regular outboard transom thru hulls of the earlier hulls. The scuppers have a check ball inside the tube and a rubber scupper flap on the outside. They work well underway. At rest my 386 lb Mercury 4-stroke pushes the scuppers slightly under water. They still seem to evacuate water from the deck, but some makes it to the bilge where it's removed by my auto bilge pump. This is my 5th season with the boat and I have yet to have a problem with the pump draining the battery. I keep the Whaler on a mooring most of the summer and haul it out occasionally for cleaning or to take it somewhere. There is one problem with the scuppers though; They were poorly installed at the factory. The design/installation allows water into the foam around the scuppers. I removed mine, dried/removed some of the wet foam, lined the holes with thickened epoxy and reinstalled the thru hulls (scuppers).
Anyway, it's a great boat and I really enjoy it. It gets compliments all the time too.

The 1996 and later Outrage 17's are truly self bailing: the deck is located entirely above the waterline with the craft at rest. Any water that enters the cockpit drains overboard all by itself without any additonal action, hence the term, self-bailing. Any other definition is mostly wishful thinking.
