This may go down as one of the lamest questions in the history of this site, but I have to ask. Is the drain valve on the inspection bowl of my Racor (OMC/BRP-compatible) fuel filter supposed to be screwed in or out when closed? It seems to create a seal either way, but I have been fully unscrewing as it seems to look like it should be done as such. Granted, a coin flip could have convinced me otherwise.

Unfortunately, mine did not come with a box or any real instructions and I’ve found the Racor/Parker website absolutely innavigable.

As long as we’re on the subject, is there any specific process to follow for draining? I’ve just been letting it pour out into a collection cup.

Hmmm. That's an interesting question. Mine, which has a metal bowl, is definitely sealed when it's turned all the way IN. I know this, because the plug (which is really just a short bolt) unscrews all the way and comes out. However, on the plastic bowls, it's a little different, as I recall.

My guess would be that there is an O-ring that seats one way or the other; probably when tightened IN. But, if it doesn't leak, I don't know that it really makes a difference.

Yeah, perhaps not. I just think there has to be a correct way to do it. Intuitively, I'd think it should be all the way "in," but the evidence I've seen said otherwise.

You'd really think there would be better instructions out there. I understand that it's probably a small percentage of their sales, but it is a consumer application none the less.

I wasn't sure exactly what model you had, but I did find their installation and service manuals on Parker's (NYSE:PH) website. I just opened one and looked at it, figuring it would probably be the same for most or all models. It doesn't specify which way the nut drain is to be opened or closed, but it does have instructions for draining nonetheless.

Here is the manual for the one I have in my boat.

Wow--I'm very impressed in your ability to find that. The link you posted is the same model I have. It doesn't talk about which was to open the drain, but you can see what I think may be the gasket/stopper through the clear bowl.

Thanks so much for your help and for posting the links. I think this could be a valuable one for people in the future. It seems that the filters often just get sold in a clear bag without instructions.

To close out this thread, the correct postion for the drain is screwed all the way out (to the right, I am told). I called Racor customer service and the rep took one off the shelf and confirmed it. Here ends the lamest question ever posted.
