Hi. I am considering a 1965 Nauset whaler and had some questions as I am new to Boston Whalers. I have read the reference section buyer's guide but wondered about how the condition of the fiberglass gel coat would potentially affect sale price. For instance what does a heavily "checked" gel coat on the interior or vertical cracks on the hulls gel coat tell you about general condition and how might that leverage the negotiation in my favor? It would seem to me that [the boat being consider for purchase] was not covered often and left to the elements. The boat I am looking at is priced in the high $3,000 range, and comes with a trailer and 15-year-old engine. Thanks. |

This would be a good place to start reading all you can to familiarize yourself with Boston Whaler boats. http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/buying.html Obviously, if the gel coat has not been kept up then value will decrease dramatically. A 1965 Nauset will have wear and tear unless it was only driven to church on Sundays. The decision to buy at a certain price is up to you. Unless you have someone knowledgeable about these boats you will need to make yourself as smart as you can so you don't get stuck with a project boat that you dump money into. |

A 1965 Boston Whaler is now almost 45-years-old, so it would be unusual to find one whose gel coat condition was like new. The verb "check" means to cause cracks. So a surface that is checked is a surface with many cracks. If a surface is heavily checked, the cracks are deeper. |

I just sold a heavily spidered or checked inside and out 1968 with a 1995 engine and ? trailer for $2900. Boat had aftermarket console and seats but was dry and all original as in no mods or custom BS. I think high 3's it better be in pretty darn good shape. A pic would be good. |

Thanks for the feedback. I don't have any pics of the condition of the Nauset. After sleeping on it , I figured it was too much of a project for me to restore right now. It would even need some work to get it usable - wood console repair, seat repair, etc. I did look at a 1968 whaler today with similar condition of the interior and exterior gelcoats. Here is a pic of the exterior gelcoat: {IMG}http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2578/3842942673_cb9e9c4eaf.jpg[IMG] Something different on the 1968 - transom delamination- [IMG]http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3491/3843730304_5858d908ee.jpg[IMG] The 1968 had a 7 year old motor and the owner is asking in the high $4,000s. I am also looking at a 77 Newport and any feedback I could get on that model would be great. This is a great site and I appreciate all your feedback. Steve |
