Came across this amusing article in the Wall Street Journal.
I suspect these men have the same genetic predisposition to those who race lawn tractors.

I saw that Sunbird in Portland Harbor a few days ago. Woah, what the ^%$#@ is that? What a maroon!
The lobster boat races are serious for a many guys. There are a few down the bay. There is a guy on Long Island (Maine, not NY) who cut his boat port to starboard and added 12 feet and then upgraded the engines. The next year he still didn't win but was pleased with the boat's performance. Go figure.
