Today was a blast with my 1985 Montauk and the new to me 2003 115 HP Johnson. Over the past couple weeks I have pulled an old 1986 Johnson 70 HP engine off my Montauk and replaced it with a 2003 Johnson 115 outboard. When I bought the 115 it had a bad lower unit, so thanks to an86carrera (Len) I got a good used one for replacement. The engine was cleaned up, sanded, primed, painted and clear coated prior to getting hung on the Montauk.
During this swap I moved the battery into the console and installed an oil tank for the VRO. Prior to this I had been pre-mixing oil/gas. The engine is mounted on a 2.5 inch set back with the anti-ventilation plate +/- 3 inches above the bottom of the boat. With the anti-ventilation plate parallel with the bottom of the boat the line of the anti-ventilation plate will hit right above the hull drain tube looking at it from behind the engine. A new OMC System Check binnacle mount control box was installed as well.
Today's test run was with the OMC SST 17 pitch prop from the Johnson 70. The boat was like a race car. I have never been a boat this quick, faster yes but not quicker. At the engines rated 5500 RPM there was lots of throttle left. Enough throttle to throw you back with a quick jerk of the controls!! At 5500 RPMs the boat was moving pretty good. We did not have a GPS or speedometer but felt like a solid 45 MPH?? I plan to get a 20 pitch Raker prop, I have a 21 pitch Rapture by Michigan Wheels but need the hub kit for the OMC.
The engine feels strong and with the proper propeller it will be very possible to beat the 50 MPH mark. I suspect it will run even better after the 50 to 1 fuel is replaced giving the VRO full oil control.
Have fun,
Rick
