I'd like to thank John Mirrasou, (OIA), for offering me a chance to act as a Safety/Guide boat in the International Paddleboard Championships in San Francisco Bay. Other Continuouswave participants were, boatdryver (Jim Laws, 200 Dauntless), diveorfish, (Tim Khosrovi, 23 Outrage), sundowner, (mike, 67' Nauset)and elaelap (Tony Wilde). Fisher801, (Allan, classic Montauk 90 Honda, (replaced blown 75 ETEC) came by to give us a shout before halibut fishing in the Bay. I don't think Warren meant that Sundowner's Nausett is sixty-seven feet long. He's to be forgiven for his typo, since he still might be a little beat up--he ran his Montauk 170 alone down from Sacramento, about 70 miles away from the Aquatic Park starting line, guided paddleboarders from there out past Alcatraz, around Angel Island and back, beginning early yesterday morning, and then without even taking time to pick up his "goody bag" (I've got it for you, partner, and it's sweet) ran back up the Bay and the Sacramento River to home. Nice photos as usual, WT. Thanks for letting me come along for a really fun day. Tony |

Thanks for posting those photos, Warren. that was a real interesting day for sure. I was too busy driving the boat to take any of my own. John Mirrasou, the Guide boat supervisor, was busy on my radio contacting commercial vessels. My boat's job was to be "Lead Boat", meaning to show the way to the boarders. (For especially those classes lying prone on their boards, visibility to navigate was very limited.) Jamie, the World champion Aussie racer who finished first was lying or kneeling on an 18 foot board and paddling with his hands. At times I had to run at 6 knots by GPS to stay out in front of him. This whole sport is new to me. I was very impressed by the conditioning of the lead athletes. I expected us "Guide Boats" to have to assist or even rescue hypothermic contestants, most of whom come from warm water areas and were having to compete in cold San Francisco Bay. Forget it, I don't think there was a single racer who needed any help at all. The people who organized the event did a fine job. I'd do it again. Jim L

Hey Tony, it was 98 miles one way. I slept from 6 pm yesterday until 10 am this morning. :-) I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It was a blast meeting everyone and being on the water. Warren |

Yep, I don't know what I was thinking. It's about 70 miles from my house up in Santa Rosa to Sacramento via roads. I remember your last trip down down from Sacramento, out the Golden Gate and back up was somewhere in the range of 200 miles, alone, in one day. Bet your chiropractor loved you for that trip and made another couple of payments on his Whaler ;-) First time I saw Jim/boatdryver's Dauntless 200. Pretty nice, for a post-Dougherty Whaler that is (just joking...sorta). I missed a great chance when Jim had his very sweet classic Honda-powered Montauk up for sale. I had had my eyes on that boat for a couple of years, and I knew that Jim was ready to get into a larger BW, but I was out of the country. Timing IS everything. I only hope the paddleboarders (there were supposed to be more than 200 of them in the competition, BTW) realize how amazingly lucky they were with the perfect weather. Those of us who regularly spend some time on the Bay rarely see it like it was yesterday, especially at this season-changing time of year. We had a record-smashing 103 degrees yesterday in Santa Rosa, 60 miles north, but it was a perfect high-70s, crystal clear and calm all morning in San Francisco. Another great Whaler day! Tony |

I must say that the viewing of all the photos was truly refreshing. Thanks for bringing this event to us from far away and near by locales. The weather was superb and the photos well posted. I could feel the mood of the day. |

It was beautiful day on the bay. Saw some nice whalers and met their owners: boatdryver, sundowner, WT and elaelap. I want to especially thank WT for taking some great pictures and shooting the breeze with me on Friday night. I would also like to thank John Mirrasou, (OIA), for offering me the chance to act as a Safety/Guide boat as well. The race organizers were a first class act. They really took care of us. Before the race I went out with a nice gentleman named Randy to set some buoys. Turns out he is the owner of ‘Body Glove’ (the makers of swimwear, wetsuits, etc.) |

It's John Mirassou, his name was misspelled on the Paddleboard roster. |

I did not know Body Glove was sponsoring, I know Randy's in-laws, nice people. Correct me if I am wrong, but I noticed a couple of things: |

Hi Lizard: What is Randy’s last name? What you noticed: 2. Folks with a sense of humor. 3. Yes she was. The water temp was 61 degrees which is above normal. I think we are having an El Nino year. These paddleboard folks are working so hard they generate a lot of heat. Not many were wearing wetsuits, if at all. There were many that just had regular swim trunks on. 4. Outside the gate there are whites, but it would be very rare for one to be in the bay and I'm not even sure why. I’m sure they have been sighted, but I have never personally heard of one. |

Lizard: 1) yes it was cold early; we reported to the docks for captain's meeting at 0700 when it was about 50 degrees and still a little foggy. I took off a layer halfway along the race as the fog lifted and the sun came out and the wind did not develop. 3) yep, bikini, no wetsuit. check out Warren's photos. lots of body heat from all the exertion. 4) the great white sharks generally hang out in the ocean where their preferred food supply (sea mammals) is more concentrated. I've not heard of one sighted inside SF Bay. JimL |

Great pictures Warren. It's nice to see Tony driving a 170 Montauk hehe. Erik |

Hey Erik: Tony had a smirk on his face all day. Maybe it was because Tony had just spent the night on his recently purchased sailboat/condo moored at the San Francisco Marina? lizard: The event was sponsored by Hennessey's Tavern. I think they have a few in the San Diego area along with Orange County and Las Vegas. It was a beautiful day on the water. Warren |

Hey Everyone: Thanks for a great day, we could not have held the event without your assistance. Your help is greatly appreciated and all kudos are well deserved. Warren, I passed your photos on to the group who forwarded them on to the entire race e-mail list. Everyone is talking about the great photos. The awards banquet after the event went off without a hitch, sorry most of you couldn't make it. After the banquet we headed over to the living room, I mean Cuperos. Later on that evening, at closing time, Paul locked the door and and we sat inside enjoying beverages and cigars. To much fun. It was wonderful to finally meet you guys. I look forward the next time our paths cross. John |
