Pat -

Help us out a little. Whaler has been making "sport" model boats for decades.

1.) Which model do you have (13', 15', 17'?)
2.) What is the model year?
3.) WHERE, exactly, are these screws? (We need a bit more than "inside sides")
4.) Did you buy your boat NEW or did you buy it as a used model?

Okay Pat -

Did you buy the boat used? It is possible that a previous owner has modified the boat in some way.

A little punctuation and capitalization can go a long way towards avoiding confusion.

I think what Pat is trying to communicate is he has a 1977 Sport 11, which happens to be 11'-4" LOA.

A 1977 Sport 11 would have left the factory with a lot more than just three screws in the inside of the hull's sides. These would have held the seat clamps in place and secured the side rails if so equipped.

yes the boat was used, the three screws are just screwed into the hull and not connected to anything.

I am thinking there were mahogony side boards that were removed or the previous owner added something that was removed before you got the boat

My previous thought was that they where holding the hull together or something like that. Now that i know its nothing like that il install a few rod holders.

thanks a bunch pat

They definitely are not holding the hull together. The Whaler hull, while it may involve the use of some fasteners along the sheer line during assembly, does not rely on fasteners for structural integrity at all. The hull and deck pieces are fused together while the fiberglass is still wet and form a chemical bond, and then the void between the two is filled with foam, again, while the resin is still wet, which also fuses to the shell and the end product is one solid piece.

Nine out of ten I'd say those are the screws that once held in the seat clamps, but the seat and clamps have since been removed. A previous owner just tightened them in the rest of the way to cap off the holes. This is a risky move on his part, since there is a risk that the screws could puncture through the outer skin. I would assume that this not the case, however.

The screws were used to fasten the mahogany "risers to the inside of the hull. There is wood embedded in the hull behind them to afford a secure attachment. The "risers's" purpose was to secure the thwart seats so they did not move.
