Well ok maybe not unless you are crazy but, it is still impressive. I headed down the the pierheads here in Grand Haven where my inlaws live as I had a feeling with the two days of 20-30 mph sustained winds on the lake shore things would have to be rough. Sure enough the waves were huge and rolling over the pier itself while the lighthouses were taking a beating. There were even a number of surfers and body boarders out for a ride. Pretty cool to see. http://picasaweb.google.com/jrohlfing/GrandHavenPier#5398834305054215026 |

Race APBA offshore 32 Skater in Grand Haven and it was rough. It was as rough as any ocean race. I am still amazed the boat didn't break apart althought some did. I said this is a lake? It was cool to know it was all fresh water and strange for me, less cleaning! The waves were solid 7-8' and breaking and we were doing about 70-80 mph from one top to the next. Friend stuffed his boat another 32 Skater triple outboards (Lipship) which stopped it and took of the engine cowls on the 2.4's. They ended up in the hospital over night buy were OK. I won the race in prostock class that was one great memory in my life. Raced up in the Great Lakes a few more times and won most times. I am still impressed how nice the people were in the area especialy the woman unlike stuck up ones in NY. Just great people every where and a huge crowd on shore for the race and in boats spectating! Thanks for the pictures! |

Reminiscent of Cetacea Page 27: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/cetacea/cetaceaPage27.html This Army Corps of Engineers reprint mentions that a dozen people have drowned from high waves in the vicinity of the Grand Haven pier, presumably having been swept off it. http://www.lre.usace.army.mil/_kd/Items/actions.cfm?action=Show& item_id=2086&destination=ShowItem |

The surfers were out off the beach in Muskegon, we took the dogs on long walk, big waves, brisk. Great to see people out in that kind of weather - |
