A "Dork Hat" is a cap with earmuffs and a chin strap. Think Elmer Fudd or Floyd R. Turbo plus a chin strap. These are really great on the boat. They keep your head warm and don't blow off. Mine is getting, to be polite, experienced. These used to be fairly available. Mine came from West Marine Anybody seen one for sale lately?

Ah Chuck you are talking about a "Took" (said like Two-k) eh... At least that is what they are called in the great white north. Check www.grundens.com as they should have them for marine use. |

These used to be called Troopers Hats, here in CT. Postal carriers also wore them. They are often fleece lined and snap under the chin. I would avoid a cap with rabbit fur while boating. It gets wets, stays wet, and is heavy when it is wet. You want a wicking material, like fleece. Plus, the rabbit is happier with its fur on. I have one with fleece and it is roasty, toasty with it on. A must have. The other consideration is a balaclava, which covers the head and incorporates good neck protection as well, without a scarf, which can get in the way. My feet used to get so cold when I skied and I asked the pro what I could get (meaning good socks) to keep my feet warm. He replied "a better hat". |

Turns out Port Supply (West's wholesale branch) still carries them. And they are likely made by a company called Orca Outdoor up in San Rafael. But Linda had already found some in a surplus store in San The ones we have have a nylon outer shell, a fleece inner

This one isn't so "dorky", it actually looks like a good boat hat. http://www.columbia.com/mens-accessories/men-accessories,default,sc. html?q=Hats&sz=1&start=10 |

Good find hoosier, I like that boobie - but, man, Pete's got the real deal right there - that is a classic "must have" IMHO. Think I'll order one of each just to have, might even take 'em on the boat. |

I believe that the typical generic name for this hat, at least in the Great Lakes region, is the Stormy Kromer. The wool cap with optional ear flaps. http://www.stormykromer.com/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=1 |

Here is the Filson Original Tin hat I got in Seattle at the company store back in early 80s - glad they still make them. Still have mine but it needs to be scrubbed and rewaxed. http://www.filson.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2092232&cp=2064999.2118241&parentPage=family I've caught a lot of Steelhead under that brim and in nasty rainy Oregon conditions. |

I have the REI version, which is plenty dorky...but nice and warm. They also made one that was like a Tilley with a "fishermans hat" brim but a sort of beanie hat lining with the fleece covering for the ears. Both versions had a Gore Tex type of lining and were SUPER warm. Being a follically challenged dude... I be way into hats! |

This is the style I've used for about 20 years, great hat for cold weather and it doesn't blow off in the wind. |
