Sometimes I think they do. With our fall run closure of fall run fishing for salmon here in northern California, Fish and Game has allowed us a six week small window of time to fish for winter run fish which are much more difficult to fish for.

Happy Thanksgiving to all and be thankful to live in a place where we have these opportunities.

In some cases I think just the opposite. When I was into tarpon fishing, I never jumped a tarpon in 4 ft. or less of water in my 13 footer. I had jumped and caught tarpon in 15-25 foot of water in the 13 footer, but if I planned to fish for tarpon in shallow water, I always took my 24 foot Aquasport. I attributed this to the shape of the bottom on the 13 footer in which small waves would make a slapping noise against the hull. Also the 13 footer did not have bottom [paint and the Aquasport did, which probably made the bigger boat less apparent to fish.

Have caught many like those in the Great Lakes.
Most were not caught on a Whaler.

Nice big fish.

Using the same gear in the same area, I have a lot better luck on my friend's Seaswirl Striper than my Whaler. Boats are the same length, we troll at the same speed. Only difference is his kicker is a 4 stroke and we catch more fish on his boat.

I, for one will always appreciate the photos of happy guys proudly showing off their catch.

And it is truly good to see that the original fishing/hunting instinct will still be present with us today.
And as far as the Whaler question is concerned;
My answer will be Yes and NO.
The No will remain in the fact that;
It is actually a question of a natural talent
As in something that you have a knack for;
And will go as far as saying that being born with the aptitude will have proven to be a God Given right.
One of many I am sure;
But then again;
One that we have taken the time to explore and develop.

The Yes will be seen as;
Our Whaler hull will be there as a "Preferred" boat.
A boat that will show Style and Identity;
A boat that will be Safe and Comfortable.
A boat that will be like an Extension of our Selves.
It is at all possible that the degree of comfort, reassurance and sailing fun may have influenced into the state of the "mood" from both anglers;
And therefore may have very well increased and sharpened of their"hunting" abilities...
I know that I personally will have gotten to be very intense while fishing;
And can easily imagine that the Whaler factor may have influenced the catching ability for those two guys..
I think that this sharing will deserve a definite "Golf Clap"
Nice Springs by the way.

This one jumped into my boat last summer on Lake Michigan.

okay, it had a little help from me.

The Whaler didn't catch anything and never has.

A few years ago a younger fisherman pulled up behind me at a dock in a 16' Starcraft Mariner and didn't have enough nice things to say about an 18 Outrage. After thanking him for his praise I had to tell him that I fished for 15 years out of the same boat he had, caught as many fish as we ever caught from the Whaler, spent a lot less on fuel and upkeep and didn't have to travel as far or as fast. No, you don't need a Whaler to catch more fish.

It is a proven fact that spending more time on your favorite fishing spot puts more fish in the live well !
My fishing partners and I positioned ourselves over several productive pinnacles located between Santa Cruz Island and Santa Rosa Island of the California coast.
The wind, current and shifting tide contributed to turn the sea in to a washing machine of white caps. Waves were splashing over the gunnels and transom at regular intervals and after an hour of continuous operation the bilge pump decided to call it a day.
I calmly pulled the transom drain plug out and went back to fishing.
For the remainder of the afternoon we had no more than an inch of water in the stern of the boat.

We limited out on Ling Cod and Rock Fish and then returned across the channel to Santa Barbara.

Boston Whalers unsinkable foam filled hull made this possible when other boats would have picked up their lines, and headed home.

On a final note last month a good friend responded to a "Grady White" that was taking on water in the shipping lanes. He arrived in time to have the 2 passengers abandon their craft and come aboard his Boston Whaler.
The Grady White subsequently rolled over and then went down stern first leaving nothing bobbing on the surface but the tip of the bow.

Did I happen to mention that I will only own Boston Whalers?

Happy Holidays

Bill
