Hi everyone, I am the newest member here. I live in Port Huron, Michigan, and am a life long boater. I just recently purchased my second Whaler. She is a 1976 SPORT 15 powered by the original Evinrude 40-HP (40554C) twin-cylinder single-carburetor. Actually, I purchased it in late August of this year and have been tinkering with the lower unit, carburetor rebuild, shifter cable replacement, gas lines, one coil, plugs, and a couple of other things. She had been hanging in a boat house along the St. Clair river for most of her life. The fella I bought her from only had title from June 2009 through August 2009. He is prior Coast Guard and spent time aboard a Whaler Stripper. He said he had to have it but his wife disagreed. Thank God! I have all the original manuals and even some brochures dating back to 1975 and 1977. The mahogany needs to be refinished, but everything is there and NOT warped. I am having a problem with the engine idle. It appears to have very low hours, the lower unit hardly looks used. Honestly I really think it needs to be used. I did rebuild the carburetor, but it's not right. I am lookng for someone who is good with these engines. But that's another post in another section. Will post pictures later. Is it spring yet? Hello Jack and Welcome! I don't live in MI, but I was just there at the GLBWCC rendezvous. You are very close to a number of CW members. Make sure you drop JimH, Home aside, and Buckda a line (for starters). They'll take good care of you. |

Jack, Welcome. You just missed our yearly Holiday get together for the GLBWCC (Great Lakes Boston Whaler Cruising Club) Holiday party....there is always next year. I grew up boating out of Port Huron and used to run our 15' SuperSport on the Black River from the paper mill to the cut off out to the lake. Later we moved up to a Montauk and I took that boat all over the area and up to Lexington. We used to have our 32' Wellcraft moored at the Water St. Marina and later moved downtown just up from the 10th St Bridge. The Whalers were our "tenders" for the Wellcraft. Later when I bought my 22 Outrage my wife and I would head up there and launch at the ramp in town. From there we would head to the beaches north of Lake Port for the day. I really love that area. You need to take your boat down to Lockeman's Hardware and boats in Detroit. I have yet to find anyone I really trust in Port Huron to work on OMCs. Lockemans is hands down the best place to have your OMC worked on anywhere in the area. There is a reason Dave Zammitt services boats brought in from Port Huron North to even as far a way as Chicago. Here is their website: |

BTW, Don McIntyre is a member that lives in Port Huron. You can not miss his boat(s) so, I am sure you have seen him on the waters there in town. He has a beautiful 21 Banana hull Outrage named White Water. His father owns Roving Kind which is a beautiful 30' Chris Craft sportsman the is dock in the boat houses next to the River St. Boat Ramps. Even when I did not know and and was a kid on the water there in town and long before this site even existed, I knew Don's and his family's boats. Thankfully through this website I have gotten to know and boat with Don. He even took my father and I out for a ride on Roving Kind last year. What a treat. He is a great guy..if you see him on the River say "Hi" and introduce yourself. Here are the boats to look for. Chris Craft |

Hey guys, Jack is a good friend of mine, and I knew he had bought his Whaler, but I forgot to invite him to the Rendezvous - Sorry, Jack. When we were at Nautical Lumber and saw the 15-footer under the tarp I remembered Jack, but by that time it was too late to call him. Anyway, Jack knows his way around a boat, and he's a great guy. If you're ever in the Port Huron area he's good guy to take for a boat ride. Now that he's got another Whaler, though, I'm sure he rather take you for ride on his boat. |

Thanks for all the words of encouragement and positive feedback. I've known KevinA for a long time. I wish he would have called me for the tour. BTW I was just at Locks hardware on W Jefferson a week ago. I was in the neighborhood for work purpose's-hanging around Wyandotte/River Rouge etc.-and I saw all those Eninrude's in the window. I had to stop. He has a one year old 60HP(white/saltwater ready???)that would look great on the back of the 15' sport. Had I known he was an icon I would have stuck around longer but it was lunch time and I know people deserve a break. I did mention my old engine and he said that there is a big difference in performance and reliability. Including the price. But it would be a great feeling to jump in and go. Just like Kevin's Dauntless with the merc. Always ready to go. My office is right around the corner from Nautical Lumber. I am planning on going today. Once I get going here I will post some photo's of my dad's old Chris Craft's...a 26' 1948 Red and White and a 1960/61 28' Connie. Have a great morning talk to you soon. Jack |

Here's a quick update on Jack's 15. He's cleaned it up quite a bit, varnished the wood, and repowered it with a Mercury 70. Jack's pretty good at restoring boats, but doesn't quite have the Photobucket thing down yet, so I've given him hand posting these pictures. Before: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/ Jack%20Jensen%20Whaler%2015/ThenewWhaler0031.jpg After: http://i512.photobucket.com/albums/t329/kalbus/ Jack%20Jensen%20Whaler%2015/BlackMax0051.jpg We'll have to wait a little while to see if he can work the same magic with the tired looking Nauset 16 he recently acquired. |

I guess I should have added that it is still a work in progress. The pictures I posted are at least a couple of months old. Maybe Jack will check in and let everyone how much farther he's gotten. |
