Not to long ago an individual from the Connecticut Public Broadcasting station came here to CW asking for footage of a classic whaler for a special they are doing on the Blizzard of 1978. There is an amazing story of a gent, Wes Greenleaf, who during the Blizzard of 1978 was stuck aboard his 1970 16 whaler as the engine quit and he drifted across Long island sound helplessly during the storm from CT to NY. Wes credited the whaler in saving his life. http://www.courant.com/entertainment/hc-winter-storm020678,0,467000. story As I happen to own a 1970 16 Nauset I offered my time and boat for the filming and they accepted. This past Sunday we towed the 16 down to CT for the filming. It was a ton of fun and I got to meet Wes and learn more about his horrifying trip. My friend, CW member Bigshrimpin, played the role of Wes' friend who also survived the ordeal onboard the boat and I portrayed Wes. My acting debut, I hope to at least have a shot a an Emmy, although I think the may have a better shot at winning!

I thought we were certifiable for heading out in the 16 until I saw this gent on a paddleboard
Here are some shots from filming on Fishers island in NY
The episode will premiere on CT PBS in Early Feb 2010. |

Awesome Jason. I told my Father in law about this and he was totally geeked about his handy work making it to TV (He hand built Jason's RPS). |

Funny you mention the Blizzard of 1978..... Was collecting some photos for a digital picture frame for my mom last weekend- and I happened to come across the photos I took during that particular storm. I lived in West Islip (south shore of Long Island) at that time and the pictures tell the tale of that tremendous snow storm. Stranded, abandoned cars buried over their roofs in snow on Montauk Highway as they headed towards Babylon Village- with front end loaders finally being brought in to remove them from the road. Snow half way up the front entrance of the West Islip High school, front end loaders removing the snow from my own street once the storm ended. It Truly was a blizzard... that someone actually survived on the sound in a 17' open boat is a miracle. |

Congratulations on your participation and inclusion of your classic Boston Whaler boat in the production of a documentary television program. I look forward to seeing the broadcast of the television program. Please let us know with a follow-up posting when the television program will be broadcast. I think many will be interested to see the television program, and particularly to look for the classic Boston Whaler boat scenes. I hope the program is aired on other PBS stations in addition to the PBS station in Connecticut. |

Contender: You Sir, Have a BEAUTIFUL BOAT! It is my intention to own such a boat someday. In fact, I'm thinking of selling one of my Hiliners (the center console) for a classic 16 such as yours. I also intend to put an OMC 70 on it too. Great Boat, Skip!, Great Pix too! |
