It has been sitting in an air tight bucket for 40 years, I guess.

Should I:
Chuck it
get it wet
trust it

Two 75 foot lengths, 5/8 I think. It would not go on the boat, just back up for the beach cabin.

I'd hold on to it, but I wouldn't trust it.

It would be relegated to decorative or light duty use.

I can think of two residents in my house who would love it as a replacement material for the tired carpet on their cat-scratching post.

Seriously though - just around the cottage as a general use item when you're not putting "make or break" loads on it should be fine.

Might be good to have along if you do any camping too.

Pull test it. Pull it to the recommended working load of the correct diameter manila line, if it passes the test, use it.

Kindest regards,

Bill

Did it have that rope smell to it,,How do the fibers feel ,,You know the short ones that stick out all over,,Do they bend easy and can you put a crease in them,,When you twist the rope in the direction of the twist doe it make that squeaky grunch sound,,If it does all this strech it between 2 trees and sit in the middle and listen to it strech,,At least you will know it will hold your weight

I will do th rope test tonight. Smells like rope, it's just really dry and has that memory thing going on.

Thanks for the replies.

Many people soak their stiff nylon rope in a water/fabric softener mix then rinse well and continue to use it.

Its looks like hemp or sasel in the pic,,One looks well sun bleached and the other looks ok ,,there are some rope dressings you could try if your inclined to save an old friend

Just being out in the PNW air has helped the rope. I will keep it for non make or break purpose.

Thanks, John

John, whether to keep or chuck this old rope depends on what your intended use for it it. I don`t think Judge Parker would have used it, though.

I'm using rope on my 13' that is about 30 years old. Of course it's still very pliable and I trust it.

Binkie, I remember ready about the "Hanging Judge" about 5 years ago. I lived in Oklahoma at the time and thought Judge Parker to be an interesting fella.
