I'm curious to find out who here actually went to a dealer and bought their Boston Whaler new? I know in my case there was no way for me to afford a brand new Whaler. I have always bought used. My finances always translated to many hours of work on said Whalers do to lack of maintenance by the previous owner.
If you would, please tell us what year and what model you purchased.

Well, I was 14 when mine was built. I had to mow lawns for 6 weeks just to get enough cash for a used 10-speed that year. I was in-fact dreaming of a Whaler then, but it was a grand dream.

My father purchase a brand new 13 Boston Whaler in 1962 for me and my brothers. Boat, Motor, Trailer, and Bimini top for around $1000. We still have the boat and are still using it today.

In the fall of 1988 I bought a 1989 Montauk new in Delaware from Taylor Marine,,I just got the break-in hours on the motor when I had to winterize it and in the spring I was in Honduras for 6 mos ,,When I got back we were wet almost everyday untill 1994

We bought three Boston Whalers new.
The other 24 were used. They were all used for fishing, or chase boats, or tenders. If I remember the first, my dad purchased from Bill and Bob Healey before they bought Viking Yachts. They had just got the dealership at their marina on Rt 9 in New Gretna, NJ. I think it was 1960 or 1961. We had a 10hp brown Johnson Seahorse motor. What a blast! The next was a Sakonnet for fishing at Barnegat Light for stripers. The last new one was a Nauset used as a chase boat in sailing regattas. The other 24 were a wide veritity purchased used, all used by us, and not in the used boat business. That’s 50 years of Whalers.

I bought my 1979 Striper 15 from Davidson's Marina in Kenmore, WA in 1978.
I bought my 1981 Montauk for Jacobsen's Boats & Motors here in Seattle in 1981.
In both cases I special ordered the boats for the factory because I wanted them configured just a little differently than the stock configuration.

I have bought three Boston Whalers brand new, all special orders as I wanted them, and I still have two of them.
1971 16' Bare Hull, which I built out as a factory duplicate Nauset. I used my skill as an Architect to measure and draw full size template plans from a friend's 1970 Nauset, and then did my own woodwork. I also built the optional Forward deck in teak, rather than white painted pine. I powered it with a 1971 Merc 115, and two years later traded it in for an in-line 6 150HP Merc. The boat, "Fish Tales", is shown in the 16' Reference section, just before being sold, minus power, in 1988.
1986 Outrage 18, with twin 115 Mercs
1989 Outrage 25 Sea Drive Blank full transom, to which I installed twin Armstrong bracketed 200 Mercs.
All three boats were bought, without power, from OMC/Whaler dealerships, as Mercury/Whaler dealerships did not exist anywhere near where I was living during those purchases.
I did all the engine rigging work myself.
Once the Fisher/Dougherty designed boats were eliminated from the line, I had no further interest in buying a new Whaler.

I purchased my 2007 Montauk new in March of 2008 from the dealer in Richmond, VA.
It had:
Karavan trailer with swing tongue
Merc 90 fourstroke EFI L4NA
Aft seats
Bow Cushion
Bimini top
Cooler/seat
swim platform
rod holders
USCG package
anchor & line
I added (dealer installed)
Northstar chart plotter, fish/depth finder, VHF radio, spare wheel/tire for trailer.
The whole package including paperwork, tags, tax, etc. cost me about 27K
In 2006 I purchased new from the same dealer a 130 Sport which I traded in for the Montauk.

I don't know if this will qualify... Purchased a 1999 Montauk 17 from the dealer in 2009. Never been registered except under a dealer number with a 1999 trailer that has never been registered either. The 2002 Yamaha had 86 hours logged.
Really more like a dealer demo!

Bought two new, a 15 ft sport 04 and 07 outrage 19 ft, traded both away and literally got between 1/4 and 1/3 towards trade in at same dealer. Would never buy another new one again

I purchased my 2008 150 Montauk as a leftover new in February of 2009. Delivery date was April 25th, a beautiful 90 degree day here in the North East. What luck!

Only Whaler we ever bought new was a 1972 blue interior 13' Sourpuss.
Used a 9.8 HP tiller Merc for 2 years until we could afford a 40 HP Merc 402.
Great boat.
Had it for over 15 years. Always garaged and looked like new when we sold it.

Bought mine new in 1996, took that depreciation like a man.
Shortly thereafter, Brunswick snuffed out my dealer and gave it to some Sea-Ray dealership down the road.

I bought my 1989 Montauk new in 1989 from a Whaler dealer in Georgetown, SC. Although about a hundred miles up the road from Charleston, it was about $3000 cheaper than the local Whaler dealer.
BTW, just like DBOutrage17, the Georgetown dealer is no longer there, and our local BW Dealer got yanked when they only wanted to sell 25' and below, so now the SeaRay dealer also sells Whalers.
That was Whaler Number TWO. The rest have all been previously enjoyed rigs.

I bought my 2001 Dauntless16 new in Aug 01 at Lauderdale Marina in Fl. Drove down from NY to pick it up. Visited 3 CT. dealers.All wanted around 27k and didn't want to get involved in modifying trailer to fit in my garage. I didn't get good vibes from dealers. While on vacation in Fl. I decided to stop in Lauderdale Marina . The salesman was very welcoming and said he could set me up with modified trailer for 23k. He even gave me choice between Mecury or Yamaha. I took the Yamaha F100,gave him the dimensions to my garage,and told him I'll be back in a week. The rest is history. Boat runs great 1000+hours and I trailer the boat once a year (Spring) to the Keys.

Bought mine Oct 31 - 2009 Montauk 170, fishing package, live well, swim platform, and stereo system.
So far so good, my fishing buddy and I really like it. The initial purchase price was just a start. I have spent a lot of money and time on elecrtonics, tolling motor, etc. I documented the addition of the trolling motor with photos and will post it all here some day soon. Also documented the addition of guide-ons for the trailer and will post that as well. I searched for info for both before doing it and had limited success so I want to help others who might need it in the future. Travelling too much at the moment to get to it!

I have bought two new Whalers - 1) a mid 70's 13 Super Sport with a 35 hp Johnson and 2) a '96 17 Outrage with a 115 Johnson. I traded the 13 to the dealer when I bought the Outrage - and have kicked myself several times since.
When I bought the Outrage, the dealer had advertised a 17 Montauk - but when I got there, the Outrage was sitting next to the Montauk - decision time. --- Jerry/Idaho

I bought my '07 Montauk 170 in August of '07 from Bobby's Marine in Burgess, VA. This was my first Boston Whaler, I had always wanted one.
I sold/traded the 170 in August '09 and bought my current boat, leftover '08 205 Conquest, from Taylor Marine in Delaware (same time in August '09).
Deepwater, thought it was interesting that we bought from the same dealer although a number of years passed from your time of purchase to mine.
Both dealers were excellent to deal with and I feel I got a good deal and great value from each.

We're all aware that Brunswick/Boston Whaler continues to expand it's production line into the larger boat market. I live in New York, but I just don't see these larger Whalers on the water. So who's buying these larger hulls and where are they going? For instance, of all the responces above, unless I misread a post, LHG had the largest "new" purchase. It was a 1989 25 foot Boston Whaler Outrage.
My thought...
Part of Boston Whalers problem may be that their older boats were so well built, that Whaler ends up competing for sales against their own product. We here all love our Whalers for a multitude of reasons. But since Fishers' original hull design has been altered or eliminated, do first time boat buyers think of a Whaler as if it were any other hull on the water with a larger price tag?
Don't misunderstand me, if I had a choice to fish 90 miles off the beach in a 32 foot Whaler or on an equivalent sized Grady or Mako, I'd go with the Whaler, only because I know what's under the deck.
Are the majority of members on Continuos Wave mostly interested in "classic" whalers?
So how will Brunswicks', Boston Whaler division survive this economic slump? Will it be tougher for Whaler because they ARE competing against resale of there own product? Or is Whaler banking on the fact that their boats have a reputation for safety and longevity. Are others who are getting out from under lesser hulls from other manufactures going to buy a Whaler? Or is brand loyalty that strong? How can Whaler survive without expanding on their market share?

In the summer of 1961, I bought a new 13' Whaler from a small dealer near Myrtle Beach, SC. Desperate to sell it, because as he put it, "I need to get rid of it cause it's weird looking and no one wants it," he almost gave it away. At the time, I was so poor that it took me six months to save enough money to buy a used Mercury (20hp, i think) to power it. I later bought a new Merc 9.8, and five years later re-powered the 13 with a 40hp. Johnson. It was my introduction to lifetime of safe and enjoyable boating.
The first of six Whalers I have owned, it probably was my favorite, and I sometimes reminisce of the days as a young man that I spent in the 13, often accompanied by my Labrador Retriever, exploring the rivers and marshes South Carolina's beautiful lowcountry coast.

Your story is a picture into the past...very interesting view of Whalers early days... I'm sure that dealer was not alone with his lack of vision for Dick Fishers relatively new design.
Any idea if that dealer is still in business? If so, what brand is he dealing?
Of the replys, the average lenght appears to be 17 feet.

I still can't figure out who's buying Whalers new larger hulls. (25' or larger)
Whalers building them but where are they going?

Bought my Sakonnet "new" in '73. I still have it. It will probably outlast me. That was back in the "good 'ol days" when Whaler dealers new their stuff.

Over the years I have owned 8 whalers(still own 4). I paid about $40,000 total for the 8. While they were all bought new, none were bought new by me and given that the 4 we still have were built in the 70's,I will have to wait another 30 to 40 years to buy a 2010 model.

I bought my 2009 170 Montauk new from Northland Boats, North Hero, VT. I ordered in in September of 2008 and picked it up spring 2009. The only options were the cooler seat and a Mills cover, it has the Mercury 90 HP L4NA ELPT and the standard galvanized Karavan trailer.

@RevengeFamily- He was a [i]very[/] small dealer who sold wooden and aluminum fishing boats who had given up the Whaler franchise. Now long gone.
Few customers in the Beaufort/Hilton Head, SC area are buying larger Whalers. Most hulls sold are 19' and under. The market for used boats is flooded with 24-28 foot hulls with twins engines.

I bought my 2001 Montauk nine years ago almost to the day at the Atlanta Boat Show. 2001 is the last year BW made the classic Montauk. In 2002 they went to the Montauk 170 (same length - much different hull).
My wife is from Charleston, SC and we priced one at "The Outboard Shop" (no longer in business) for around 25k (with a four stroke).
The boat show price (loaded with a two stroke) was 21.5k. The dealer was TAL Marine (Tim and Louise)(no longer in business) located by Lake Lanier.
My daughter is twelve now. Oh the good memories we already have on the Whaler.

Bought three new Whalers:
1985 15' Super Sport for $9600 sold in 1998 for $10,000.
1998 Montauk 17' for $18,500 sold in 2008 for $18,000.
2008 Montauk 190 for $38,000 still have the old girl!!!!

It had: Karavan trailer with swing tongue Merc 90 fourstroke EFI L4NA Aft seats Bow Cushion Bimini top Cooler/seat swim platform rod holders USCG package anchor & line I added (dealer installed) Northstar chart plotter, fish/depth finder, VHF radio, spare wheel/tire for trailer. The whole package including paperwork, tags, tax, etc. cost me about 27K In 2006 I purchased new from the same dealer a 130 Sport which I traded in for the Montauk.

Never been registered except under a dealer number with a 1999 trailer that has never been registered either. The 2002 Yamaha had 86 hours logged. Really more like a dealer demo! Condition?..... Perfect!!!

frontier	posted 01-12-2010 08:42 PM ET (US) Only Whaler we ever bought new was a 1972 blue interior 13' Sourpuss. Used a 9.8 HP tiller Merc for 2 years until we could afford a 40 HP Merc 402. Great boat. Had it for over 15 years. Always garaged and looked like new when we sold it.

Although about a hundred miles up the road from Charleston, it was about $3000 cheaper than the local Whaler dealer. BTW, just like DBOutrage17, the Georgetown dealer is no longer there, and our local BW Dealer got yanked when they only wanted to sell 25' and below, so now the SeaRay dealer also sells Whalers. That was Whaler Number TWO. The rest have all been previously enjoyed rigs. --- WhalerAce

Visited 3 CT. dealers.All wanted around 27k and didn't want to get involved in modifying trailer to fit in my garage. I didn't get good vibes from dealers. While on vacation in Fl. I decided to stop in Lauderdale Marina . The salesman was very welcoming and said he could set me up with modified trailer for 23k. He even gave me choice between Mecury or Yamaha. I took the Yamaha F100,gave him the dimensions to my garage,and told him I'll be back in a week. The rest is history. Boat runs great 1000+hours and I trailer the boat once a year (Spring) to the Keys. I'm happy
Alphonse	posted 01-12-2010 10:26 PM ET (US) Bought mine Oct 31 - 2009 Montauk 170, fishing package, live well, swim platform, and stereo system. So far so good, my fishing buddy and I really like it. The initial purchase price was just a start. I have spent a lot of money and time on elecrtonics, tolling motor, etc. I documented the addition of the trolling motor with photos and will post it all here some day soon. Also documented the addition of guide-ons for the trailer and will post that as well. I searched for info for both before doing it and had limited success so I want to help others who might need it in the future. Travelling too much at the moment to get to it!

I traded the 13 to the dealer when I bought the Outrage - and have kicked myself several times since. When I bought the Outrage, the dealer had advertised a 17 Montauk - but when I got there, the Outrage was sitting next to the Montauk - decision time. --- Jerry/Idaho

Robert V	posted 01-13-2010 07:53 AM ET (US) I bought my '07 Montauk 170 in August of '07 from Bobby's Marine in Burgess, VA. This was my first Boston Whaler, I had always wanted one. I sold/traded the 170 in August '09 and bought my current boat, leftover '08 205 Conquest, from Taylor Marine in Delaware (same time in August '09). Deepwater, thought it was interesting that we bought from the same dealer although a number of years passed from your time of purchase to mine. Both dealers were excellent to deal with and I feel I got a good deal and great value from each. Robert
RevengeFamily	posted 01-13-2010 09:02 AM ET (US) Thanks for all the feedback... We're all aware that Brunswick/Boston Whaler continues to expand it's production line into the larger boat market. I live in New York, but I just don't see these larger Whalers on the water. So who's buying these larger hulls and where are they going? For instance, of all the responces above, unless I misread a post, LHG had the largest "new" purchase. It was a 1989 25 foot Boston Whaler Outrage. My thought... Part of Boston Whalers problem may be that their older boats were so well built, that Whaler ends up competing for sales against their own product. We here all love our Whalers for a multitude of reasons. But since Fishers' original hull design has been altered or eliminated, do first time boat buyers think of a Whaler as if it were any other hull on the water with a larger price tag? Don't misunderstand me, if I had a choice to fish 90 miles off the beach in a 32 foot Whaler or on an equivalent sized Grady or Mako, I'd go with the Whaler, only because I know what's under the deck. Are the majority of members on Continuos Wave mostly interested in "classic" whalers? So how will Brunswicks', Boston Whaler division survive this economic slump? Will it be tougher for Whaler because they ARE competing against resale of there own product? Or is Whaler banking on the fact that their boats have a reputation for safety and longevity. Are others who are getting out from under lesser hulls from other manufactures going to buy a Whaler? Or is brand loyalty that strong? How can Whaler survive without expanding on their market share? Mumbo Jumbo	posted 01-14-2010 11:05 AM ET (US) In the summer of 1961, I bought a new 13' Whaler from a small dealer near Myrtle Beach, SC. Desperate to sell it, because as he put it, "I need to get rid of it cause it's weird looking and no one wants it," he almost gave it away. At the time, I was so poor that it took me six months to save enough money to buy a used Mercury (20hp, i think) to power it. I later bought a new Merc 9.8, and five years later re-powered the 13 with a 40hp. Johnson. It was my introduction to lifetime of safe and enjoyable boating. The first of six Whalers I have owned, it probably was my favorite, and I sometimes reminisce of the days as a young man that I spent in the 13, often accompanied by my Labrador Retriever, exploring the rivers and marshes South Carolina's beautiful lowcountry coast.

I'm sure that dealer was not alone with his lack of vision for Dick Fishers relatively new design. Any idea if that dealer is still in business? If so, what brand is he dealing? Of the replys, the average lenght appears to be 17 feet. I still can't figure out who's buying Whalers new larger hulls. (25' or larger) Whalers building them but where are they going? While they were all bought new, none were bought new by me and given that the 4 we still have were built in the 70's,I will have to wait another 30 to 40 years to buy a 2010 model.

The only options were the cooler seat and a Mills cover, it has the Mercury 90 HP L4NA ELPT and the standard galvanized Karavan trailer.

Now long gone. Few customers in the Beaufort/Hilton Head, SC area are buying larger Whalers. Most hulls sold are 19' and under. The market for used boats is flooded with 24-28 foot hulls with twins engines.

GAwhale	posted 01-16-2010 05:06 PM ET (US) I bought my 2001 Montauk nine years ago almost to the day at the Atlanta Boat Show. 2001 is the last year BW made the classic Montauk. In 2002 they went to the Montauk 170 (same length - much different hull). My wife is from Charleston, SC and we priced one at "The Outboard Shop" (no longer in business) for around 25k (with a four stroke). The boat show price (loaded with a two stroke) was 21.5k. The dealer was TAL Marine (Tim and Louise)(no longer in business) located by Lake Lanier. My daughter is twelve now. Oh the good memories we already have on the Whaler.
