I'm hoping someone with an Outrage 17II can help me! I am planning to buy a new GPS unit this winter to install in the electronics box on the top of the console. The size of the GPS unit I will purchase depends on the vertical height inside the electronics box. Unfortunately, my boat is in inaccessible winter storage for a few more months, so I am not able to measure it myself. If someone who has the same boat could measure this for me I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,
Ed

Ed -

I emailed Royboy, who owns the same model, about your question with a link to this thread. Maybe he will have an answer.

Ed - I have the same boat - and same situation - boat covered up for the winter. But, I suspect that you are thinking about putting your GPS in the electronics box in the top of the console for safety and storage.

In my opinion, the plexiglas door on the electronics box would not stop anyone - therefore, I have considered another option. I am toying with the idea of modifying the seat - so the gottom cushion of the seat would be hinged up, revealing a 6 - 8 (and maybe even 10) inch deep stainless storage enclosure. The box would be padded, ported (number of 1 - 2 inch diameter holes) for ventilation and the seat lockable. This provides a secure area for our GPSs, hand held radios, microphones, am/fm radios, et al. and gets it out of sight and provides protection. Such a change still provides room for tackle boxes and tool boxes to be stored under the seat.

I have the thing basically designed - and only need to firm up the correct dimensions, the hinge/lock of the bottom cushion and the installation within the seat. I have my own welding equipment - so that is not a problem. Having a welding shop make the box would cost a bit - but still well worth it (in my mind). --- Jerry/Idaho

I just bought a 1993 17 Outrage, and I have a Garman 4208 I kept from my sailboat when I sold it, I want to install it on the Whaler, is there a way to remove the top part of the electronics box on the console? I have not picked up the boat yet so I dont know what the console looks like. I bought this boat from pictures on Craigslist. Talking with the owner on the phone I just bought it. This will be my 5th Whaler, I cant help myself. Anyway if anyone has any neat ideas on mounting a Garmin 4208 on a 17 Outrage let me know. If I can figure out how to post pictures I will, this is one sweet boat.

Interesting thread. I just picked up a Ray 55 VHF for my 95 Outrage 17 and was at the boat barn today checking out the top compartment for fit. I have the Ray A57D mounted on top of the console RHS, compass a few inches left of center on top as well. Boat came with an old West Marine VHF mounted in the upper compartment, LHS and stereo/radio bracket (old unit as well) next to it leaving space on RHS of compartment for other stuff.

I find that compartment to be kind of hard to deal with. It drops a few inches below the bottom of the opening and is surprisingly deep forward. The edges inside have big gaps so small stuff gets caught in there.

If the opening were taller that would be better. The plexi cover is somewhat lame and not great regarding securing gear and electronics. It is also weird to open and close.

I am not sure what I am going to do mounting the new radio. I want to modify that compartment so it works better for its intended purpose.

Standing by for ideas.

Id like to know if the top part of the console is removeable, I like the old consoles of the late 80s, where its flat.

I don't think so, not mine. I suppose anything is removable w/ Sawzall or more precision saw. It's not an easy thing to work in and around that console. We removed all mounting screws last summer and tilted the entire console forward to install the Raymarine A57D unit. The panel is not the easiest thing to work on either. It would be nice if it pulled out or opened w/ more service loop on wiring.

What year is your boat?

The boat I just bought, is a 1993. Call me crazy but I have not seen it yet, bought it sight unseen. After talking with the owner and a few pictures that was it. I cant help myself, this is my 5th Whaler. I have this Garmin 4208 I saved from my sailboat and want to mount it somehow on the console. I like it because you can add radar to it, fish finders, and they over lay each other. I dont think I will ever need radar, its too nice a unit not to use. Also I plan on replaceing the fiberglass pilot seat back with a teak one, teak rod holders, just to make it look less plain, way too much fiberglass. All my other boats had some teak. Anyone have any ideas how to mount my GPS, has a 6in screen.

Sounds great - I will check my photo archives to see if I have some console photos of my 95. I thought about switching the seat to wood but so far sticking with the original. I'll send to your email in profile.

IF you do decide to do the seat, contact Mike at Nautical Lumber in Detroit, we know him very well and he does an excellent job. I was involved in wooden boat industry some years ago and Mike is the real deal, highly skilled craftsmanl and a super nice guy, You should not have a problem mounting the unit.

Thomas -

The electronics box is not removable. It is moulded in with the rest of the console. I have a 1991 in my driveway.

The top of the box is flat and will be fine for mounting the GPS. You will like the taller console. Keeps you dry and out of the wind.

Here is a photo of the console.

Then again, here is a full album of photos:

If you have questions, I suggest you start a new topic.

Phil- Thanks for asking Royboy. Hopefully he will be able to measure.

To provide more details on the situation- I currently have a Lowrance x-75 fishfinder mounted inside the electronics box. The specifications I found show a height for the x-75 of 5.9". I want to replace the x-75 with either a Garmin 440s or 540s. I would prefer to go with the 540s due to the bigger screen size. However, the specifications for the 540s list the height as 6.4". So, I need to verify if I have enough height in the electronics box. My gut says yes, but I'd like to verify it before making such a large purchase.

Is the console the same on the Outrage I as the Outrage II?

Jerry-

I like your idea of using some space under the seat. Fortunately theft isn't a big concern where I am, but when I doubt I think I would put the GPS inside the lower console where it is out of sight. I agree the plexiglas door on the electronics box is not going to stop anybody who wants to get in!

Roy emailed me that he sold his boat last fall.

As for the consoles, the Outrage 17 II has a different console than the II

Here is the 1991-95 version:

Here is the 1996-99 version
