Any of you East Coast Whaler folk had any experience with the Sporty Crab Trap? They hinge in the middle and are spring loaded to open flat deployed and fold shut when retrieved. I bought a couple of them as a gift for my
step-son as he is soon to be stationed in Va. for submarine duty. I am hoping he will get some use from them
in Chesapeake Bay. He has shipmates there who own Whalers so he will be boating in style.

I use collapsible traps and the work ok. You just have to man them all the time and sometimes they don't close properly. Mine are the pyramid type.

It looks like a good design and sturdy. I have only used the cheap pyramid stye and they work ok. I always had to beef up the hinges with stainless rings.

I would check with the local fisheries in Va. to see if the Sporty Crab Trap is legal. I believe their are some restrictons on crab trap configuration, at least in MD portions of the Bay.

I prefer the shallow height collapsible square traps with vinyl coated wire. Very reliable, easy to stow and generally less than $5.00 each.

Check out stackablecrabtraps.com. Captain Bruce makes a high quality trap that beats most off the shelf varieties in durability, ease of use and of course stackability. Definateley go vinyl coated for added durability.

The Sporty Crab Trap looks like a easy to use light weight design. They should get him interested and started. He'll probably quickly learn most folks on the Bay end up using several light lines with chicken part attached and a dip net. The simple old way catches the majority of the crabs by recreational crabbers.

I have use them all, but the way to go is the Stackable's. They store great both on the boat or in the truck. I take 30 traps out {3 stacks of 10} in my 170 Montauk and there is plenty of room, unlike the box traps. Plus the ease of baiting and unbaiting. Theres no other choice to me.

Gee I dont know if there legal either. They can not be over 12 inch by 12 inch I belive. I have never seen any like that around here. I see how they work and if there spring loaded to close I dont know about that either. I use the "open top" traps that stack and thats probably the same as what Nats uses. There about 10 bucks each and easy to bait and deploy from a moving boat and great from apier. Bottom line if the law allows them they will be fine and easy to store.

Stackable is the way to go, just make sure to change out the lines they typically come with.
