I've been slowly working my way up to this, getting ready to hit the Mud Hole bouy (about 12 miles out) in my 1991 17' Outrage. It's powered with a 1991 120hp Johnson with a 5hp 4-stroke Merc kicker. In addition to the 34 gallon fuel tank I have a 6 gallon auxillary tank. I'm thinking about upgrading that tank to either 12 or 18 gallons. I haven't decided yet. I still need to pick up an Epirb before the season starts and I should be good to go. Am I missing anything? I've made runs like this before, to the Shrewsbury Rocks, about 10 miles from the Shark River Inlet, but never offshore. I've followed many members that have taken their 17' Montauks offshore and am looking forward to joining the club. Any words of advice? Its early to be talking about tuna fishing but something got to give! With new cushions and FF, I can't wait to get the boat back in the water. How much longer until spring?

Dave I used to run the Mudhole in my 19 from old Barney, pick a nice day and should be no sweat. 12 miles is only 1/2hr run or so from the inlet where you are. For me it was about triple. |

You should be fine, after making sure there are no T-Storms or squalls or approaching cold fronts. Actually, from SRI you would be returning with an afternoon seabreeze on your tail, which is a pleasant ride most summer afternoons. I used to run my 180 Wellcraft fisherman (solo) out to the BA buoy and 17 Fathoms from Keyport back in the 80's. Caught numerous common pelagics, like skippies, bonito, Spanish macks and false albacore. And...also the occasional schoolie BFT and grasshopper dolphin in late summer warm, bluewater. Now I'm running our 210 Ventura out of Barnegat Inlet to Barnegat Ridge, which is about 14nm out, a similar run. Just pick your days...You seem to have the fever, which I totally understand! |

Dave,If we can coordinate schedules, and the weather cooperates, I would love to join you out there. I have a new to me 22 Outrage Cuddy, and I am looking forward to getting a little further offshore this summer, if the stars align for me. I trailer and typically put in around Keyport, so I would be coming around Sandy Hook. There are a few others around, besides Tombro - Liteamorn (Ed), Bella Con23 (Joe), Sal, and Ridge Runner. Perhaps we can coordinate a Jersey Shore outing or some striper fishing this summer. Dan |

Hey, we Outrage 17 skippers need to stick together. I got mine about one year ago, bought her in the dead of winter, no chance of sea trial and stuck her in my buddy's pole barn until last Spring. We had her out as much as possible but not really enough to fully shake it down. We are right next to Lake Michigan with several large lakes that have channel access to the big water. One is two blocks from our house. I installed new electronics and have 94 Johnson 115 that runs great but I am thinking about repower or kicker. Boat is 95 and is in fantastic shape. Everytime I've had it out in rough water it amazes me. Previous owner had Montauk and I believe smaller Whalers too and said Montauk is awesome but Outrage 17 blows it away. Let me know how you do further out. Great Lakes crew is planning a Lake Michigan crossing in July however, we might be on a trip out west. Take care. |

Thanks for the input, Its greatly appreciated. I've been wanting to head offshore since I've gotten my current Whaler, just never had things setup just right until now. I thought I would get the chance last summer but the weather had other ideas. Time really isn't an issue during the summer for me to to head out, but when I headed out, the weather didn't cooperate. When I couldn't go, the weather was wonderful. Just my luck!Any other suggestions? Thanks again. Dave |

Breakdown kit: Fuel filter Plugs Hose Hose clampsMany times the issue that causes breakdown is fuel, if so the kicker might very well be rendered useless also. I'm sure there's more but I would include these items. |
