It's sad to see a real seaman pass so young. http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2010/02/10/ discovery-channel-deadliest-catch-captain-dies/?test=latestnews

Sad to read that message. I always enjoyed Capt. Phil more than all the other skippers. No-nonsense guy.IT COULD HAPPEN TO ANYONE, don`t smoke, lose weight, eat healthy, lower your stress level and get check ups. (sorry for the lecture) rich/Binkie |

Unfortunately, as a fan of the show, this doesn't come a great surprise.A TV show edited for dramatic effect, designed primarily for entertainment isn't a good reflection on reality, but the show often seemed to paint him as the Captain most likely to (sorry for the insensitve pun) burst at any moment from the stress. I seem to recall him being hospitalized in a recent season, and the show seemed to enjoy focusing on his shocking smoking habits. |

I just looked it up- he'd recently had a pulmonary aneurysm, while at sea. |

Well put cgodfrey. Based on what I've seen, Phil was probably the guy I'd most like to have a beer with. It is my hope that Dsicovery will respectfully pull the Cornelia Marie footage from future seasons rather than make a spectacle of it. |

Too bad about Capt Phil. Unfortunatly it's not only the wild seas and weather that were dangerous in his job. If you don't sink or get washed overboard the lack of sleep, poor diet, smoking and constant stress will get you. I can't help to think of this whenever I eat king crab. |

I loved Phil and Sig, the rest are just OK. I hope this does not effect the price of crab this year ;). I wonder what his kids are gonna do now. |

He had a pulmonary embolism, not aneurysm. An embolism occurs when you throw a blood clot. It floats around your blood stream until it gets stuck somewhere. If it gets stuck in the vessels that supply blood to your heart, you have a heart attack. If it gets stuck in your brain, you have a stroke. When it gets stuck in your lungs, you have a pulmonary embolism. These clots are not isolated incidents, what caused the first one is likely to cause more. This, sadly, seems to have occurred to Phil Harris. An aneurysm, which Phil is not reported to have had, is a ballooning of an artery. |

Plotman's correct.I'm not a doctor, just quoting Captain Phil directly in an interview he gave. He's wasn't a doctor either, clearly, and misspoke when asked about his affliction of May 2008. |

Unfortunately, Phil was a ticking time bomb. But he made his choices and lived (or died) with the consequences. In the end, he was probably true to himself and that is all anyone can ask.I love watching Deadliest Catch, even when some of the regulars irritate me. A local neighborhood kid grew up to fish those waters and I respect the crews of these ships. |

Somewhere, a Red Bull PR person is probably preparing a statement in case someone points out that Captain Phil consumed sever liters of the stuff daily |

What a shame, I'll miss him on the show. My two year old son and I met him last July 4th and it was wonderful. |

This is sad news, and the worst possible nightmare for those two boys. He seemed to be one of those bigger than life characters, and will no doubt be missed by those who knew him. |
