Here is a fun project for a cold winter afternoon...Search this site and other boating sites to see how many ways people have misspelled the name 'Montauk'. I bet there have been more than 12.

Hey, Deeno, anyone who has ever lived on Long Island (Montauk Point) would know how to spell it.

My personal favorite was the recently-posted "Montaque".

Rich you obviously have not searched the Long Island (LI) craigslist (CL) for Whalers. :P

Montawk, Montack, Montach, Montech etc.. seen them all on the LI CL.

Jeff, I can believe it. Some people spell like they speak. I left 42 years ago, but I visitied Montauk Point many times as a kid, it was one of my favorite places. Its almost 150 miles from NYC, so I guess the folks that say Montawk never get out there.

I just call them Whalers, what power do you have and how do you like your trailer. After looking at the boat if I see something I like I ask how did you do that and why, Nice Whaler...

I've posted here about this before. Out here in the San Francisco Bay area, many oldtimers and commercial guys refer to any classic Whaler skiff as a "Montauk," no matter its length or type.

My personal favorite is MANTUCK. It has a nice, masculine ring to it.

Mantuck sounds like something a transvestite might do while getting dressed.

The speller that Buckda referred to had two versions. The title was "Montaque" but my preferred misspelling was buried in the text. "Montague" is the name of the longest Island just outside of Prince William Sound that helps to shelter PWS from the wind and seas of the Gulf of Alaska. It is also the name of one of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game research vessels which was surplus'ed and sold on E-bay almost ten years ago.
