Lots of boats on the Petaluma River chasing sturgeon this nice early spring Sunday. Here are a couple:

And here's a shot of a non-BW fisherman putting a nice fish in the boat (which looks a little like a Montauk 150...the boat that is, not the fish):

Spring is almost sprung out here, perhaps because today was the first day of daylight savings time. May it endure!

Mudshrimp? I say confiscate this guy's boat and give him a Bayliner for changing the WHALER logo ;)

Oh well, he probably didn't catch any fish.

Real nice folks. The guy standing forward of the console recently sold an early 'eighties Montauk and was still feeling the withdrawl pains. The owner of 'MudShrimp' recently bought the boat--it's a 1990 classic--and was quick to explain that the corny logo came with the purchase. I suspect he'll change it before long. Otherwise a sweet Montauk in good condition. By the way, I told them about continuousWave and maybe they'll be joining the forum soon. I hope so, 'cause they'd be just in time to hook up with our May NorCal rendezvous.

Tony

As for the sturgeon, they were killing 'em on the river today. Several boats reported fish in the 60" range, and others were throwing back scrappy 'little' two-footers. I wasn't fishing; my wife and I went for a little cruise. Oh yeah...where were you yesterday and today, IrishCreamer? I went all the way down to the Pump House yesterday and today we went halfway there. I suspect you must have been fishing the Napa River area, being the sturgeon fanatic that you are. You missed a strong bite on the Petaluma River. I'll be back--with my rods this time--on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Actually, I think the guy who recently sold his Montauk experiencing withdrawal symptoms...not the other spelling.

I can identify with that guy who sold his early 80's Montauk. Sure was a nice day down here, windy outside but smooth along the kelp. I hope Amulet is behaving for you.

I'm very pleased with your old/my new Montauk, Tim. Better come check her out the third week in May at the NorCal rendezvous.

is the rendezvous open to so. cal. whalers?

Absolutely! C'mon up and we'll tell you the tale of a Newport Beach CW member who's towed his boat to the NorCal rendezvous a couple of times...the last time he stripped down to his skivvys and jumped into the frigid early morning SF Bay waters in an attempt to swim a line to one of our members who was aground. And then there's Sheila...!

Fluke-

We'll be driving up EARLY Fri. 5/21 a.m., from So. Cal., if you want to be vehicle #2 in our gumball rally and follow us, shoot me an email. Perhaps Jock will head up from Newport, if he has not sold his rig yet. Any of you other So. Cal CW'ers thinking of going?

Hi Tony,

Sorry I missed you. Littleblue was on the river Saturday afternoon and then I joined him for an all night fishing session in the cold for a few bass but no sturgeon.

We did manage a few quality fish the weekend before though:

Can't wait to see everyone and your new Montauk in May. Hopefully I will have some wiring completed by then.

We are heading up from SoCal but may already be up there by then. If not a whaler convoy would be fun!

That was a fun weekend! Here is the action from my boat that day.

As for Sat night...looks like we should have just stayed on the river and fished into Sunday :(

Irishcreamer - that is one nice striped bass! What did she weigh?
irishcreamer posted 03-17-2010 11:49 PM ET (US)     Profile for irishcreamer  Send Email to irishcreamer
Hi next,

Unknown on the weight. We measured her at 38" inches and snapped a few quick pictures before releasing her. We figure she was 25+ pounds but cannot be certain. I know you guys on the East Coast catch many large bass but out here 38" is absolutely huge for a striper.

One thing is for sure, these Whalers are fish catching machines!

Tight Lines,
IrishCreamer

That is one nice fish no matter which side of the continent you caught her on!

Here's a 36 pound 10 ounce striper that my son caught and released in Frank's Tract in the Sacramento Delta.

There's lots of great fishing in Northern California, fresh or salt water.
