B.C. Ferries officer charged in 2006 QUEEN OF THE NORTH ferry sinking Times Colonist Published: Tuesday, March 16, 2010 Former B.C. Ferries bridge officer Karl Lilgert has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, four years after two people drowned when the QUEEN OF THE NORTH veered off course and sank off the northern tip of Vancouver Island. The vessel was on its way to Port Hardy from Prince Rupert when it failed to make a critical turn in Wright Sound and hit the north-east side of Gil Island at 12:22 a.m. Fifty-seven passengers and 42 crew members abandoned ship before it sank. Two people -- Shirley Rosette and Gerald Foisy -- were never found and have been declared dead. Out-of-court settlements have been reached with the victims' families. |

The refusal of the licensed officers and watch standers on the bridge of THE QUEEN OF THE NORTH at the time of the grounding to testify in any hearings held to date was a significant diversion from the historical practice of ship officers and crew. Considering the reticence that Mr. Lilgert has shown to offer truthful testimony about his conduct as the officer on watch on the bridge at the time of the grounding, I am not at all surprised that criminal charges have been filed against him. Perhaps the ensuing trial will finally elicit his testimony and an explanation for his conduct. |
