I was wondering if anyone has experience boating around False Cape State Park. I'm tentatively planning to go down for a weekend sometime in the next few months. Here is a link to the State park page
[http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/fctrgatr.shtml]

Assuming that I trailer down to the area, where is the best place to launch for access to the Back Bay side of the park? There appears to be a ramp off of White Cap Ln, just north of the park.

Where is the best place to tie up the boat overnight? False Cape landing appears to have a decent dock.

Any thoughts you all can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Can't help with an area to tie-up overnight but, there is a public boat ramp at Owls Creek. This is next to the Virginia Aquarium, off General Booth Blvd. This is about 15 miles/ half hour from False Cape. You could try the Sandbridge campground, although I am told this is shallow water (backbay area).

False Cape Va State park is a very-very remote place. You will launch really across from that park across the back bay. I think thats Knotts island . On False Cape theres no car or truck traffic in there at all other then rangers. Its a walk in or bike in place. The False Cape Area in the back bay is very shallow . If you are looking to go in the ocean you have The Owl Creek launch ramp public nice and free or Way down in the Carolinias to launch at but thats not really access to the back bay. After you cross into NC from False Cape theres houses and roads along the coast the northern most place at the OBX with sand roads. But that strech about 12 miles from Sandbridge in Va Beach to NC is very remote. I have seen a "ramp" at the visitors center at the park above False Cape where the National wildlife refuge is going into the back bay but its not for "Boston whalers " but small craft like kayaks. You can drive to that spot but not any farther down. Its about 10 miles to the NC line from that "ramp" and its all a "wilderness area" as such.

Take look at the area from the Google maps you will see what I saying.

Chesapeake, thanks for your insights. I have a few more questions.

Are you referring to the ramp on Knotts Island at the intersection of Point Ln and Cason Point Rd. Do you think this is the best launch point for getting to False Cape Landing? You mentioned that Back bay is very shallow. Am I foolish to even try power boating around the area? The Porpoise Slough area adjacent Knotts Island looks to be very muddy. Will I be able to make my way through there?

If this trip is too risky, do you know of any other attractive boat-in boat-out camping/recreation areas in the southern Bay or VA Beach area?

I would recommend going across the Bay Bridge Tunnel to either Kiptopeke State Park or Cherrystone Camping Ground. They both have good ramps and campgrounds. Both are about 20 miles from Va Beach.

I would think about heading further south to OBX. Their are a fair amount of campgrounds and some really nice ramps

Ramp at Manteo
