I was out fishing early this morning and was remembering my friends who died fighting for us. I am flying my flag on the boat today. It is a day to pay tribute to all those who are or were in our service to protect us and those who died for us.

Most importantly, in the words of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address: "...that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain..."4400 dead U.S. servicemen and women in the Iraq invasion and occupation; 1000 dead in Afganistan with no end in sight. Literally hundreds of thousands seriously injured in their physical and mental health. [Rhetorical question deleted.] Tony |

I find the use of rhetorical questions to generally be counter productive to discussions. Authors who wish to make a point should just make a direct statement of their opinion or make a direct statement of facts. Please note that I have absolutely no intention of initiating a discussion of the politics of the involvement of the armed forces of the United States in conflicts with other nations. One of the reasons that I did not make any special observation of Memorial Day this year is due to the inability of some participants to avoid politicizing the holiday. Please, don't bring political crap to the website. |

From the Do As I Say, Not As I Do file:[Re rhetorical questions] "Could we clear up the warranty offer from Mercury on the replacement power head? L H G says that when Mercury offered ahkhiev an out-of-warranty replacement power head they included a one-year warranty on the replacement power head, but ahkhiev's representation is that Mercury did not offer him any warranty on the replacement power head. I don't understand this discrepancy. How could ahkhiev have gotten the impression that there was no warranty and L H G gotten the impression there was a warranty?" --Current thread running in the Performance forum I love ya anyway, Jim, and it's your website. Peace, and happy holiday (if that's an appropriate thought on this sad day). Tony |

Tony--What can I say?Actually, my questions that you quoted were not rhetorical. I was expecting an answer from both parties to try to resolved the inexplicable conflict in their representations of what happened. One of the parties responded and gave further clarification, just as I hoped. |

I took my kids to the local cemetary. The city was putting on a memorial to all those who have died so we can be free. Too many people take advantage of our American freedoms. Thank you to all those who have given the ultimate gift. |

Nice thoughts Bill. Thanks for the thread. My flag was flying on the boat yesterday as well. We traveled by water to attend an annual Memorial Day ceremony hosted by some friends. My utmost respect to those that didn't stop to ask why but just did what they were asked to do so that we could express our opinions in any forum regardless of how inappropriate. |

A very bright, capable and man of high integrity who held public (political) office once told me; "You will learn everything you ever need to know about politics if you read the Gettysburg Address, don't ever forget that..." And so I read the Gettysburg Address and realized that he was exactly right. This man was a colleague of my wife (who was an elected official for 15 years) and made it a point (as a liberal democrate and peace activist) to remind us all this time of the year. We all understand Jim's editorial policy and most of us respect it like me. I too hold Memorial Day as important and toured Arlington National Cemetery a few days before the holiday weekend some years ago. I appreciate this thread and think it is important that we remember our history on a few special days each year. For the record, that wonderful mentor fought in the worst of the Battle of the Bulge. My father-in-law, his friend, was a German POW. Both lived to remind us, gently. To those of you who have served you have my deepest respects. |
