Topic: What's my red Moeller tank worth?

Because of ethanol fears, I replaced my Pate tank two years ago with a red Moeller tank. As I recall, the Moeller has a 24-gallon capacity. Moeller has now introduced a white tank especially for positioning under the RPS of Boston Whaler 15 and 17 foot models, such as my Montauk 170. I am very tempted to switch to the white tank, but wonder what my red one might be worth if I tried to sell it. I really have no rational reason to change out a perfectly good tank, but must confess that I do like the white over the red as far as color goes. The new white tanks sell for $250 or so, including freight, and I wonder if my red one might bring as much as $125, shipped to a customer's door? I believe there's one for sale now in the accompanying forum, but I don't know if there's been much in the way of action. Any opinions? Thanks, Marsh

I guess my Moeller is actually rated at 26 gallons, even though I've never filled past 24 gallons of so.Marsh

If you have had gasoline in it you might have a difficult time shipping it - try to sell locally. |

RE: shipping - you may be right. However, I have had no trouble shipping fuel tanks in the past. I washed them out, boxed them up, and sent them on their way. Carrier didn't ask; I didn't tell. Marsh

The red 26-gallon tank sells new for about $230. I think you'll be able to sell it for between $50 and $100, depending on how long you're willing to wait for a buyer.Tim |

I sold my tank for more than $100 to a forum member, and I had several inquiries willing to pay more after I sold it. Just as a frame of reference for you... |

Sal, was that before or after the white tank became available? I believe the availability of the white tank will reduce demand for the red, thus my lower price prediction. Still, you just need to find one buyer.Tim |

After. I sold my red tank 3 weeks ago on this site, because I bought the white tank myself. |

I must confess that I am real gunshy about the white tank. Sure it looks great sitting on the West Marine shelf but what about 5 years from now? The red ones look great on the shelf as well but they stain, fade, turn pink or orange. I can just imagine what a white plastic tank in a harsh marine environment will look like down the road unless maintained by LHG.Lastly some gas staions will not let you pump gas into a tank that is not red. Decades ago when I pumped gas we could not fill up gallon jugs anymore for the lawnmower owner, etc. |

If you are strong enough to lift a full 26 gallon tank into the back of a pick-up I doubt there are many gas stations that will give you an argument about the color of the tank. |

Try putting kerosene or diesel in a red tank. |
