48 hours ago, I sealed some non-structural cracks in my (non-Whaler), fast lake boat. We keep it at the wifes grandparents house along the Colorado River, near Needles, CA. This is hot, dry, (really dry), desert with daytime highs in the 105-115 degF range.

Anyway, as the title suggests, I used 3M 5200 of the "regular" variety, as opposed to the "fast cure". The packaging said to expect it to become "tacky" in 48 hours at 70 degF. Well, it's been 48 hours and the lowest temperature it's seen has been around 80, with daytime highs in the low 100's. Yet when I just picked up the nail I used to puncture the tube, it came off easily on my fingers. I was sure that, if anything, the heat would speed up the curing time. What gives?

I've been told that moisture cures 5200, which is why it cures quicker below the waterline if you launch the vessel soon after application. Try putting the nail in a glass of water for a day or so. Bob

Yup, polyurethanes cure by moisture (usually found in the air).

Try spritzing it with a spray bottle of water now and then. It will take a while to cure, perhaps a week.

Twice I have experience 3M 5200 NEVER curing. I followed the directions and never figured out what happened. I changed to 5200 Fast Cure and had no problems.

I too had the same problems in Colorado...
Being from Florida Lot's of humidity...no cure problem.
I second the spritz of water to the application..
No moisture...no cure.
