The Coast Guard officials say a 16-foot boat called the Boston Whaler was badly burned in a fire in Rockland on Thursday.

According to the Coast Guard, a Good Samaritan called the fire in, saying two people were still aboard.

When the Coast Guard arrived, they were both on the breakwater holding a line to the vessel.

They were both rescued, and nobody was hurt."

16 Ft. Whaler, Not much on that size boat to cause/start a fire. What Happened? sounds like carelessness or stupidity...

Back in 196_ we saw black smoke coming down Great Peconic Bay from the west. A 13-ft Sport on fire. Why unknown, but we smelled the smoke and saw the charred remains.

The boat was called the Boston Whaler. This does not necessarily mean it was made by Boston Whaler.

I wonder if either of the two people on board were smoking?

Well, let's see. There is a few gallons of gasoline. And remember - fiberglass burns to the waterline.

And having investigated many accidents (albeit in a technical environment) - I have often said - there is one thing I don't want on my boat - is a fire.

But - as contender points out - there are the carelessness and stupidty factors.

But, with any fire - there are two things required - a fuel source and an ignition source. While there was ample fuel for a fire - the ignition (electrical spark or open flame) - and the ignition could have been induced from many such related events/sources - spark, someone lighting a cigarette, cigar or pipe, et al.. That part, we will probably never know.

Regardless, it is most unfortunate that a Whaler has been destroyed - but most fortunate that no-one was injured. --- Jerry/Idaho
