Note the similarities and differences in methods used to rig these Whalers for salmon fishing off the coast of northern California. All of these photos -- beginning with a shot of my old Sport 15 center console 'Cetus' -- were taken day-before-yesterday, the final day of a great 10-day run out here. I realize that there are a lot of photos, so I guess this thread is for the true BW/salmon fishing enthusiast (nutcase?). Enjoy: http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers247.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers232.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers230.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers221.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers218.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers210.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers200.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers192.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers189.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers185.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers183.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b309/elaelap/ TreecutandsalmonWhalers171.jpg Whew...break time. Nice pictures and nice fish, Tony. When I get on the ocean, I like to get away from the crowds. The salmon fishing grounds looked like a parking lot in your pictures. I was thinking of running up to Point Arena but my wife changed my plans this weekend. Our last trip to Fish Rocks was only about 10 miles short of Point Arena. I hope to get back out to Bodega Bay in the next couple of weeks. Warren |

I'll see you out there either tomorrow, Monday, or this coming Wednesday, Andy. (Andy/fishcop skippers 'Marlin', a beautiful ~55 ft aluminum F&G boat. He's a longtime CW member and has been tremendously helpful to recreational salmon fishermen/women over the past five or six years as we've been trying to figure out how to deal with seasonal closures and limited spawning returns.) Tony Oh yeah, the first photo in this thread -- 15 ft 'Cetus' --was originally owned and operated by Andy. He sold her several years ago to the guy I bought her from. |

Great grammar, paleale! I meant to say that Andy once owned and operated the boat shown in the first photo, not the photo itself. Yikes...and I used to do some news editing. Tony |

Tony, Whalers seem to be much more popular in your neck of the woods than ours. Here are a couple from this past Friday: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d97/DougV_/Fishing/BigLogo2.jpg ( I am not sure what's up with the oversized, backwards logo) http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d97/DougV_/Fishing/WestportRevenge.jpg The weekend of the July 18 a nice banana Outrage 21 launched just ahead of us, but I missed the photo op. Here are the partial results of our limit of 6 kings: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d97/DougV_/Fishing/GoodFishing.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d97/DougV_/Fishing/FirsttotheBoat.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d97/DougV_/Fishing/Westport7-30-10.jpg My nephew Ryan and the young crew member from my pictures, Casey, took Ryan's Katama out yesterday. His first trip out to the big blue in his boat and without his dad or myself. I talked to his dad, Matt about it after the boys left. Matt said he felt like he was passing a torch. Ryan and Casey are about the same age we were when we started crossing the bar at Westport, chasing salmon. They didn't have quite as good a day of catching fish as we did on Friday, but I am sure the adventure was well worth it for them. Doug Vazquez |

Nice pics Tony! I learned a few things from them. 1)Whalers must breed where you go boating. I was wondering if you guys every get tangled in each others lines, or props even. When we go trolling in Spain for Bonito you get a similar situation and tangled lines and props happen.(The Spanish fishermen ALWAYS have the right of way...that's what they think anyway) Thanks for the Whaler pics for my collection! Lots of nice photos, Tony. The first one, of your previous boat, shows so little freeboard it must be full of Kings. Nice conditions out that day. Lots of people with no PFD's a couple of weeks after 4 needless deaths of guys not wearing PFD's. Hmmmm........ JimL |

Tuco Great photos, dont have time too look at all of em today. Send me a photo of SF area salmon mooching rig, Ill send you one of mine...basically a diver and herring. Getting the herring to spin just right has been the key to our success. Weve been trolling slow, getting everyone down almost dead slow idle, then speeding up, hooking fish. A couple of ol timers predict the heavy and late spring rains have delayed normal run up to 30 days. Im not taking a chance he is wrong. But, Fishing should be great right now...instead, it is spotty. mk |

I almost never mooch in my own boat, Mike, even though many old timers have great success with that method. Plus, especially when fishing alone, I only fish with artificial stuff -- junk. Like you, however, I sometimes slow my usual 2-3 kt troll down to almost nothing, letting my lures sink way down slowly and then come up again as I pop my control back in and out of gear through the detent. Every now and then I pick up a nice one, though this season I haven't done much except during the hottest bites. My wife and I are heading up to Montana tomorrow for a little change of pace -- fly fishing near Yellowstone -- so I reckon the king salmon bite will come back on like crazy out here for the week while I'm gone ;-) Tony |

Almost any part of the PNW in Aug cant be beat. Ive lived in Missoula but never did get around to visit Yellowstone but it is high on my to do list. My Stepdad is almost a regular there, many stories about huge Rainbows. Are you going to make a full circle around the ring of fire? Pass Lassen and Shasta, turn off I-5 at Weed to K Falls. Heading to the Dunes with ATV's Weds - Sun. mkj |
