| Author | Topic: Sad Story of Stolen REVENGE 22 W-T with E-TEC 225 |
| Jeff |
Today, I received an email for a friend, Dan Lent about his [Boston Whaler REVENGE 22 W-T]. This was really a great clean boat that came from Southwestern Michigan and one I spent a lot of time helping him through the inspection of. He has put a lot of time and money into this [Boston Whaler REVENGE 22 W-T] to make it perfect which included a repower with a 2010 E-TEC 225. The last time he used it was this past Sunday 8/8/10 and when we returned today the boat was not longer on it's mooring. He emailed me today asking if I could post a MISSING thread on the sites I frequent so, I am helping him where I can. If you are in the area and see the boat please contact Dan at the number below and the authorities. If you see the boat or motor listed somewhere done the road please call Dan or the authorities as well. Here is the information on the missing vessel: -1986 Boston Whaler Revenge 22 W-T Desert Tan hull with large "Lost Sailor" name on both sides. Connecticut Registration CT 0429 BD. Boston Whaler HIN#BWC5605F586. One distinctive feature on this boat is the middle section of the stern seat rail has been removed for motor clearance (see images). -2010 Evinrude E-Tec 225 HP DPXIS outboard motor has scratch on port side of cover. Evinrude Serial no: 5268528 Missing from its mooring in Black Rock Harbor, Bridgeport, Connecticut since Sunday August 8, 2010. REWARD Please contact Dan Lent (860) 888-2374 if you see this boat. Here is a link to images of the Vessel (both with old motor and new E-Tec). Thanks for looking and your help. Cheers, |
| Jeff |
Sorry, here is the correct link to the harbor the stolen Boston Whaler Revenge was last moored at. |
| jimh |
I have linked to this article from the main banner of the website. Let's help find this boat! |
| Jeff |
Thanks Jim! |
| Peter |
Dan should report the boat/motor stolen to his Evinrude dealer so that information can be logged against the serial number in the Evinrude database. That way if the thief or some later acquiror tried to get it serviced, assuming its not in pieces, it would be identified. |
| lizard |
Excellent recommendation Peter. I would also post it on local craigslist's boat links throughout CT/LI/NY/RI. Someone is going to spot it, hopefully sooner rather than later. He should also watch craigslist for someone trying to part her out. |
| lizard |
You know, Black Rock Harbor is a pretty straight shot to Port Jeff. I would post at some launches there as well. In my marina, you have to have proof of registration (ownership) and insurance on the vessel. Someone is going to have to trailer this. |
| Peter |
Boats are typically not stolen and kept. If it was stolen, it was stolen to get the motor. If it was stolen, my hunch is the boat will be found (can't sink it to get rid of evidence) without the motor. Dan's Whaler isn't going to be used to smuggle drugs or illegals like you hear about in Florida. There was a pretty stiff afternoon breeze blowing from the South/SouthWest on Sunday which would probably put the wind almost directly into Black Rock harbor making the entrance somewhat rough. Tide was on the rise by the late afternoon so if the boat came loose from the mooring in the late afternoon or early evening I would expect it to have drifted into the harbor. |
| Tohsgib |
I hope they don't chainsaw the transom like they usually do. |

By the Way Jeff, you're to be commended for your efforts to get the information out on this theft.... Thanks, Pat |

Thanks! Following up now on a witness saw the boat running. Keep Looking please. Dan Lent 860 888 2374 cell |

I agree with Peter. The boat will show up minus engine. Same thing happended to my 25 Outrage while on vacation in Savannah, Georgia in 1997. Boat was found about a mile from the Marina, less twin 200 Mercs, and practically no damage to boat and Armstrong bracket. I stumbled right into the middle of an outboard theft ring operation, with an inside spotter guy at the marina where I was docked, no less. A SeaTow operator in a Whaler! What a perfect cover. Nobody wants to keep a Revenge. Simply not enough glitz. |
| Peter |
What time was it seen running? |
| LOSTSAILOR |
Hi Pete, It was seen at 3:45 on Sunday August 8 leaving Port Jefferson NY harbor. The last time that I used it was Saturday. I also informed Evinrude and the company says that whenever someone tries to bring it in for service that it will come up as stolen. So considering that dealers are the only ones who have the required software, it wouldn't be something that a logical person would buy stolen. Even with infrequent maintenance requirements, it is so advanced that it must be dealer serviced eventually. Also, Evinrude says that removing it usually triggers sensors that only the dealer can reset in order to get it to run correctly. Thanks again for everyone's help; I will keep you updated. |
| hauptjm |
I know this is ex post facto, but it seems we all should consider some sort of disabling circuit beyond the simple key. Maybe a hidden switch that disables the binacle would prevent the thief from being able to run the vessel with lack of control even if they are able to get it started. I know when I repower my old gal, I will certainly look into it. Unfortunately, many boats are stolen (or the engine is removed) while the boat is on the trailer. For this, there are several methods that could be employed: disable the trailer, secure motor to hull or trailer via chain or cable, etc. All methods could be overcome, but maybe the thief will proceed to an easier target and avoid the extra time taken to steal the boat/motor. Sorry that you have to deal with this: good luck in your search! |
| Peter |
Wow. Pretty gutsy for the thief to be running around in a stolen boat in broad daylight on a weekend. |
| kwik_wurk |
Even though dealers have the software to work on etecs, and thus limits service options for the engine. It doesn't rule out a crooked dealer (or employee). I would get a listing of etec dealers and make cursory check at these places, and drop off a flyer. It's a unique boat, and this will help. Most service guys will notice a nice BW, with an etec on the back. |
| L H G |
Why bring it anywhere for service? Evinrudes are supposed need no service for 300 hours or three years, and self spray a little oil for winterization. So if the engine is as advertized, no dealer will see it. It's probably headed for Cuba, Mexico, South America or the Islands. |

quote: Interesting. Can anyone tell me more about this phenomenon? |
| Jerry Townsend |
Just a thought - GPS tracking systems are available that are used for various applications - trucking, et al. Would such a system, very well hidden on board, work on a boat. If it would - that would tell exactly where the boat is. Such systems would require electrical power - but I would suspect that the electrical power requirements would be small. This power could be a separate battery - which could be charged everytime the boat is operated. Thinking about it - if such a system were available, I would put one on my boat - though we don't have much of a problem in this area. I suspect that many others would use it too. I apolgize if anyone has addressed this same thing in this, or other thread. I don't know if it would be reasonably considered - but just the thought. Jeff - hope yours is recovered and not damaged. --- Jerry/Idaho |
| Plotman |
Jerry- If they work on a car, they will work on a boat. They sell versions that work for 6 month or so off of a lithium battery and communicate every hour or so via the paging network. Like $30 a month though. |
| Jeff |
Don, Glad to hear someone at least made a visual on the boat being driven and not just floating off from the mooring. Keep us posted. BTW, Sorry I mixed up the dates.
The boat belongs to Dan, I was just helping him get the word out. To your GPS question, I have often wondered the same thing. I heard of companies using this Dewalt system on equipment around job sites with great success. I wonder if the system is robust enough to handle being on and around the saltwater. |
| tedious |
Yamaha has come out with a system similar to automotive ones. Doesn't keep them from stealing the whole boat, but they're going to have to tow it. http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/commandlink_plus/clp_page06.aspx Tim |
| SJUAE |
Jerry I just suggested re-using your old mobile to track your boat http://continuouswave.com/ubb/Forum6/HTML/002783.html Could be a much cheaper option Regards |
| wezie |
Two things come to mind. Very New Engine: Who knew of it? Dealer or employees, or "watchers". Sunday afternoon: Vermin knew he would not be back for awhile. It just sounds too clean. Hope it is found intact! |
| Tohsgib |
Just like any murder scene....where is Dan? How much did he have HER insured for? Was the missing boat enough motive for insurance? No body no crime eh? This is VERY interesting! |
| lizard |
Ah hah- Port Jeff, I knew it. Let craigslist do the work for you. Someone has seen this rig. Put a reward out. |
| the1jonc |
Probably a longshot but I saw some E TEC gauges for sale on Craiglist Long Island. http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/boa/1899922138.html |
| LOSTSAILOR |
Thanks please keep your eyes open. It had one I-Command digital gauge and 110 hours on the engine also. Sea Key is a gps boat tracking/security system that I guess I will research when the time comes. It's probably expensive. http://www.seakeyna.com/ I also had a two black Diawa Interline internally led "Sealine X" rods and Daiwa trolling reels with line counters on them (Daiwa sg27lca model reels) with Scotty sideways rod holders and braided line. So if anybody sees those for sale let me know. Here's some picture sof the rods http://missingrods.shutterfly.com/pictures/5 There is a reward also. Thanks! |

Dan, Do the local law enforcement officers seem like they are actively looking / helping you recover this or are you getting the brush off? Have they put you in touch with their detectives? Please keep us informed, and keep this thread active / on top of the Whaler GAM. |

What is the insurance company doing or stating at this time? When do they consider it gone and cut a check? |
| LOSTSAILOR |
It's about a month before the insurance company considers it gone. The police and the insurance company all have investigators working on it diligently. Thanks again for everyone's help! I have heard about some thieves coming up to moored boats at night in Port Jeff NY lately too. Be careful if you are there. |
| hauptjm |
Any word? |
| LOSTSAILOR |
They haven't found it. They are still looking though. I did get a chance to talk to the eye witness face-to-face recently, and he said he saw two white males driving it out of Port Jefferson Harbor on Sunday August 8 at around 3:45 PM under its own power and we had a long talk about the details. So to me at least, this means there must be some connection to the Port Jefferson NY area. Perhaps the "tow boat" or boat they came over on is based there or in Setauket. In other words, the fact that they turned this into two steps by first taking a stop in Port Jeff for hours before going on to their final destination means there must be some reason why they stopped there. The boat was full of gas (around 75 gallons) and oil so they could have simply gone anywhere around Long Island Sound without stopping in Port Jeff once they got it started for example. I'm guessing the boat is down towards near New York City somewhere now. With everyone on the whaler sites nationwide aware of it, I also don't believe someone would risk stashing the whole boat in a barn and using it later or trying to sell it next year or something in a different area. Overall, I really don't understand why anyone would steal this E-tec though because you need the software to work on it. The official Evinrude mechanics that I talk to say they wouldn't even change the spark plugs without plugging it into the software. Now, whenever somebody plugs it in, it will come up as "stolen" from BRP corporate. Removing it from the boat will also cause problems if you don't have the software. Anyway, it will probably come into an Evinrude mechanic somewhere in the world eventually and maybe it will get traced back hopefully to the thieves. There was also a few years older Revenge 22 that I saw from time to time in my harbor from New York, so maybe that guy wanted the motor and took it, who knows... I am still in disbelief as they have used E-tec 225's for @13k so is it really worth getting caught for @13k? However apparently, it is pretty easy to steal a boat and not get caught. Please keep the word out, watch your boats, and thanks again. |

I found it today laying in a deserted industrial yard in Bridgeport CT. A nearby worker said it had been there since last year. (It is even on google maps satellite view). It is totally stripped of every part and even the cockpit floor is missing. Very sad... b/c it was in good shape when they stole it. Here's a link to the photos I took today. http://gallery.me.com/danlent#100150 If you see used Revenge parts for sale let me know. They took the bow rails, swim ladder, stern seat, companionway hatch and teak doors, wood down below, and everything else. I had very good insurance at least. Thanks! Dan |
| Jeff |
Dan, What an absolute shame to see the boat like that. Even though it is no longer yours I am sure it was strange seeing it again. |
| Basshole |
Ouch! Those pics are depressing. What a shame. |
| alfred |
I feel your pain. Must be hard seeing it like that after all the time, effort and resources you put into it. |
| Newtauk1 |
Sorry for your loss. I will be certain to keep my eyes open on Craigs list for parts. |
| dscew |
What a shame. Is it still yours even if there was an insurance payout? It certainly looks like it could be brought back to glory with some work. Essentially a bare hull begging for it. |
| jimh |
Depending on what part of Bridgeport, Connecticut the boat is now in, it still might be hard to recover. I used to live in Bridgeport in the 1970's. |
| Bulldog |
Closure at least! That really is a drag, like others said there is probably still value there for someone to rebuild her. Engine still hasn't turned up?.....jack |
| Jeff |
Here is the lat long.. +41° 11' 18.24", -73° 11' 23.54" If you put the coordinates in google earth or google maps you can see the boat sitting there just off the river. |
| Tohsgib |
If I had the title still in hand I would go get it and make a nice Outrage out of it...sans railings of course. |
| jimh |
Jeff--Thanks for the position pointer to the stolen Boston Whaler boat. The imagery date for that photograph is August 31, 2010. The boat was stolen on August 8, 2010. It appears to have been rather quickly stripped and abandoned. |
| alfred |
I wonder if the thieves had originally planned to come back to remove the fuel tank? In the first pic, it looks like someone stuffed the fuel filler pipe with some foam to prevent anything from getting in. What is the tank capacity? Looks like a huge tank. |
| Binkster |
If I lived in the area, I would try to buy the stripped hull from the insurance company. I would hope they asked for the title when they made the settlement. I wouldn't restore the boat but make something different from it, A Lot of the stuff that was removed was glitz anyway and could be reconfigured to give the boat a more fishing boat look. Only thing is when the insurance company realizes the boat has value, it won`t be as cheap as you think it should be |
| domlynch |
A great shame, it shows the world we live in today, and what kinds of sick [people] there are these days. I guess it goes with the lower echelons (or scum) of the human race. I have had a boat stolen in the past too, it really sucks. Even though I received the insurance payout--all for a "quick buck". Still, worse things can happen, for example consider poor Seve Ballesteros who passed away from brain cancer today; I lost my dad the same way in Nov 2008. Any day above ground is a good day as they say. Better luck in the future.. Dom |
| contender |
Had a boat stolen once, The police (Miami Dade Metro Finest) came out and it was reported, Next day we got a call from the Police Dept. They wanted to know If I knew were my boat was, I told them no, They told me "Well we found it illegally parked and we put a ticket on it and had it towed to a compound yard in Homestead" (about 40 miles from my home) You have to pay the tow fee to get it out....Idiots. |
| martyn1075 |
Has anyone thought about [installing] a GPS tracker device? I have been thinking very hard about installing one. A sad story like this makes me even think harder about installing one. Depending on the service and device you can actually plant a [tracking device] no bigger then your pinky just about anywhere. As well the system can work off both main power and separate batteries when the thief pulls the terminals. Also with some carriers you can track your boat yourself and watch your boat via satellite anywhere you can [access the] internet. It sounds too good to be true. Do they work? My feeling is they do. Maybe someone here can shed light on why they wouldn't. Martyn [Please start a new thread to discuss installation of tracking devices. This thread is specific to a particular boat theft. Thanks--jimh] |
| LOSTSAILOR |
Thanks everybody for the good words. I'm fine, but I do feel bad for the boat; it didn't deserve that. It had spent it's whole previous one-owner life in fresh water, stored inside in a boat house, with no bottom paint on Lake Michigan. It was in great shape for a 1986. What a waste. The insurance company says they have to go get it and then they will sell it. When it comes up for sale I'll let you guys know. |
| flippa |
That just stinks Dan! You must have felt sick when you first saw it. It does look like they attempted to get the fuel tank out by the looks of all the foam in the boat. I can't believe how clean they stripped it. The only parts that look to be still attached are the cabin vent hatches and a few pieces of trim. I wonder why they would take so much unless they were "restoring" their own Revenge WT. Were the vent hatches still any good? I might have to take a drive & finish the job of stripping it. |
| Peter |
Besides the motor and its rigging components, it looks like they were after anything that was made out of metal. |
| andygere |
If you wander around the site where the boat was dumped and presumably stripped, you'll probably find a patch of charred soil where they burned all the insulation off the copper wiring pulled from the boat. After the pros lifted the outboard and other high value parts, the scrappers finished it off. Sad to see such a beautiful rig destroyed for a few hits of schmack. Dan, I hope this rotten experience doesn't discourage you, and that you own another fine Whaler someday soon. |
| Plotman |
Dan- I'm just curious - did you find the boat yourself, or did it get reported to the police and the info found its way to you... |
| K Albus |
Here's a link to the site of the abandoned hull on Google Maps: http://goo.gl/maps/kx0V |

Why were the decals/name removed? Must have taken a while to do. |
| kwik_wurk |
Wow, lame. I hope insurance covered things, and gets you out on the water this spring/summer. I have also had boats stolen. One was found half sunk (beached) upstream in a local river. I was lucky that the power head did not go under water, the only damage was a wet hull and bad battery/wiring. Another stolen boat was more of a dinghy (11') and never returned. (These were stolen of the mooring buoy in front of the house or the bulkhead in the middle of the night. Nowadays, if I leave the boats out for several nights I lock them to the buoy.) |
| beemerfan |
Dan, that's terrible. Looking at the hull in the vacant lot gives bad feelings, like you're losing faith in humanity. But don't feel too bad about the boat, it lives on via the internet. The Wm. J. Mills Co. is using pics of Lost Sailor to illustrate it's products! http://www.millscanvas.com/cfm/pictures/images/Flytop%20closed.jpg Pics are shown on the page for 22 REVENGE WALK THRU, Produced from 1984 -- 1991. |
| TommyWhaler |
I would be willing to bet a dollar to a donut that the thieves have the same model Whaler that they were restoring, because some of the stuff they took is only relevant to that hull. |
| jimh |
The new E-TEC motor is a much more likely target for a thief. |
| Jeff |
If you look at the google images from just after the boat was stolen you can see it is perpendicular to the adjacent river and it looks like the motor is gone. The windshield and other parts look to still be there. As it sits in the images from when Dan found the boat it had been turned and is now sitting parallel to the river and stripped. With glass spread about from the windshield and other random things missing I would say the real thieves got the boat on shore, took the motor and were done with it. Everything else was done likely by secondary predators, scavengers and vandals. |
| Tohsgib |
But why are the decals missing? |
| WT |
I think the decals are missing so as to not scream "Lost Sailor", I'm stolen. So they sanded off the boat name and also Boston Whaler decals. Just guessing, Warren |
| LOSTSAILOR |
The stripped boat is being auctioned tomorrow in Hartford CT at noon(6/21). It was a dry hull remember. There is one bid for $125 so far. If somebody buys it, please let me know. WWW.COPART.COM |

I missed the end of the auction. How much did it end up going for? That will be quite the project for the winning bidder; there was nothing left of her. |

| Waterwonderland |
Just curious, but approximately what would it cost to refit the boat? |
| Whalrman |
Interesting how it's been listed,3rd time now. 1st listing there was a $1000 deposit required at end and then the deposit was taken off and put twards the auction start price of 1400 with NO bites, and now it's back as the first listing with the $1000 deposite required and 4 bites. The only way to work, somewhat, is with a damaged Revenge as the parts donor hull. To try and due an Outrage, is the same way, having a donor hull for parts tranfer. |
| Tohsgib |
Bow hatches are still there amzingly as they cost a couple hundred each. A crabber or?? could make a nice workboat out of this mess...all he cares about is it is a sound hull that can't sink. |
| Owtrayj25 |
If the hull is sound, I'd convert it to an Outrage. Hell, most of the demo is done. I know pics don't show all defects, but the inside gelcoat appears in good shape, albeit plenty dirty. Lots of time still to put into it; Pop the cap off, install a leaning post and console and she's ready for an engine. |
| Owtrayj25 |
aaahhh, might need a deck cover too.... |
| martyn1075 |
I was thinking more along the lines of a custom outrage cuddy conversion??? keep the front I assume its missing the windshield. Some cutting would have to be done around the sides but it has the enclosure might as well use it. Still big money to do this but someone with the skill might be able to pull it off as well cut the cost down. I hate seeing peoples whalers end up looking like this due to some low life idiots. |
| jdizzie |
Poor old girl....as a Revenge owner, it really saddens me to see that whaler that way....if that lost sailor could only speak....she'd have some stories I'm sure.... =( |
| Jake B |
I was up at 4:00am feeding my first daughter and catching up on infomercials and trash TV when I caught a quick shot of this boat. At first I thought it was a whaler, but after freezing the video online it looks more like a knock off. Maybe theres a tree house in the Lost Sailor's future? I hope not. [I deleted this link. It led to a promotion for a theatrical movie followed by a teeny-tiny image that was incomprehensible.--jimh] |

How depressing, Lost Sailor was stolen, abused, now unwanted. I wonder if the thief was ever punished. Auction ends 4 days from now. |
| wezie |
You can restore it and buy the parts from the Vermin that stole it in the first place. Great deals on the internet. Great deals on E-BAY!!! Nice circle of corruption! |

Last August 2010 my Sea ray was stolen out of a fence, electric fortification ect. I was on vacation . I had it insured with Travelors with an agreed stated value ect. They sent an investagator down and questioned why I had not not looked into a gps tracking device. They finally paid off 7 months latter and put me on the clue list as a risk. Apparently you should not vacation 25 miles from Mexico. If anyone has heard of a decent priced gps and monitoring device, let me know. I would put them on both whalers and jet ski. |
| power2boat |
One mans trash is another mans treasure. The 22'Outrage-Revenge hull is the best hull to customize. I'm working on my 2nd 22'(guardian) hullright now. If you don't mind a little dirt work, starting with a bare hull, you know what's under the floor and what goes on top. It is a way to make a great hull even better. Too bad it was ripped and stripped by some low life, bad karma will come to those. If I wasnot 5000+ miles away,I could love that boat. |
| leadsled |
Has anyone gone to see the hull since it was recovered? I mean the hull below the waterline? For the right price it might make a good workboat to replace my aging 21 outrage mongrel workboat. From what I can see I would have to take the rubrail off to take the cabin off and the cabin extends along the gunnel all the way to the stern. I have a suitable console but would have to make a tank cover , Rear cover over the rear fishwell ,and several front covers/hatches. I would lose the tank in favor of an above deck tank . I would need at least a front cleat and new rubrail. Does anyone see anything else it would need. The boat is only 80-90 miles from me. How about the name phoenix for this boat. |
| flippa |
I dare you to go buy her! She needs to be brought back to life! Then I would help you to offset the cost of your purchase a little by taking the two hatches off your hands, perhaps the fuel tank and anchor locker cover as well. Where you located? I'll work for boat parts! Do a google search; there is a very detailed article (like 30 pages & hundreds of pictures) on one of the boating and/or fishing sites about two guys converting a Revenge to an Outrage. I came across it when I was researching online articles about the Revenge last winter. |
| flippa |
After thinking about it for a minute, if you decide to buy her, I would recommend cutting the cabin at the bulkhead to keep the anchor locker, the hatch and bow pulpit. I really like the storage it provides on my Revenge 22. |
| leadsled |
Flippa, it sure would be nice to save this hull. My 1977 Outrage 21 hull had less than this boat when I bought it. A bow and two ski eye's,Thats it. Never had a tank, console or the cap that gives it it's freeboard. The major concern with the 22 Revenge is all the covers that need to be fabricated to cover the tank, rear fishhold, front anchor hold and the other hatches up front. One of my jobs at Boston Whaler was to install tanks and tank covers on the 18- 25 foot models. It will take some doing to make those. I have installed hundreds of tanks but have never had to remove one. I could make a giant fish hold out of the tank well by building a fiberglass box starting in the well and going up so it is 2 feet high so you could use it as a seat like a big coffin. I have a big console with a fuel tank under the front seat that I could use. I would remove the whole cabin structure. It might be a real problem as I suspect it is cemented to the gunnel with kitty hair. Sure looks like it would be good for Cod,Bass and Lobster fishing. The main thing is if the bottom is damaged. If it works out you could end up with the tank, roof hatches and anchor locker cover. By the way it does not have a pulpit. Tom from Scituate Mass. |
