For those of us who cruise, boat camp and use our boats at night let me share a recommendation for your gear chest - Black Diamond Apollo Lantern "A bright, non-glaring, soup-can sized backcountry lantern with rechargeable capabilities."

I bought one last year and confirm it is one of the best things I have ever put in my camp box, pack or boat console. It has three folding legs (tripod), collapses for easy stow, dimmer switch and super long battery life. I have used it camping, traveling, in the 4 Runner, power outages, reading at night and on the boat (sits perfectly on the console or seat). For those of you gearing up for fall trips the Apollo would be great especially for that Isle Royal trip. I admit I left it home the weekend of the Lake Michigan crossing.

I have every version of lantern from white gas Coleman (including mini Peak One) , a propane Coleman, a Primus propane (real small), battery Coleman, candle lantern -the ones I can think of and this is #1 choice by far.

I've had one for a year and agree with you that it's a great lantern. I also have a Black Diamond headlamp and some of their backcountry ski gear. All good stuff.

Headlamp, even more important and #1 tool for almost everything including working on car, boat, painting just about everything. Been through a bunch of them and agree Black Diamond does everything awesome. Best headlamp for my needs is Petzl Tikka XP2 - I don't leave home without it. Red light feature is major deal for me esp after dark boating and fishing. Keeps night vision keen. If no boat traffic I can shut off all lights, turn on red light, read the instruments and see the controls no problem.
