In late fall of 1990 I broke the bank and bought a brand new 1989 17' Montauk with a brand new 1987 90 HO Merc 2 stroke. The Hull was still shrink wrapped from the factory and the motor was still in the box, and a 1991 Eagle Trailer. I put it in the water in March or 1991. We owned this beautiful package for 14 years fishing in lake Erie/ Detroit River and taking it up to Ludington/ Hamlin Lake for many nice camping trips. In 2004 with my wife going with us much more we sold her to a cool Canadian and bought a 2000 21' Conquest. (Needed Pottie :) ) It hurt to see the Montauk go but we were moving into an awesome boat so that eased the pain quite a bit. We started out anew with a slip instead of trailering, We enjoyed the 21' from '05 until July '10. We had not been using it that much the last year and knew that would continue so we sold our dream boat. It was a wise decision but I soon wanted something I could keep in the garage like my old Montauk. At first we thought a used 13' might be a good choice. Just for the hell of it I e-mailed my Canadian friend I sold my Montauk to almost 6 years earlier and told him the above. He responded by saying that he and his new wife were considering selling her and getting something they could sleep on etc. To make a long story short....I bought my 1st boat the "89 Montauk back. I always kept her in great shape and I only bought her back because my Canadian friend did the same...Hoping to keep her for a Looooong time now! Thanks for taking good care of her my friend! I just ran her around the Detroit River today for the 1st time since bringing her home and I got my mojo back already! LOL Thanks!! |

I'm always amazed when people list the boats they've had, the Montauk is usually at t he top of the list, and they've had more than one! I couldn't image, no matter how much I loved my Ford Pinto, that I would buy the same car 2 or three times... |

Dave I have owned 8 17's. Newborn...My dad bought me a new 13 in 1982 and I sold it to my neighbor in 1986. I moved to FL in 1998. Every time I went back to NJ I would leave aa note on his door to buy it back. I finally towed it down to FL in 2006. Creepy thing was it was 20 years to the day from which I sold it. |
