I have never seen [a Boston Whaler boat] quite like [the one shown in the linked image below]. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d137/jmartin-/DSCF8584.jpg John |

John -- Surely you jest. That is a Newport. http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/16-17/models.html#newport |

Well, what is a Newtauk? I think of this as a Newport. http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d137/jmartin-/DSCF8581.jpg John |

That is also a Newport. A "Newtauk" is essentially a Montauk layout (a taller Montauk console, positioned in the center with the RPS also in the center and a Newport inner hull liner. |

John, The only real difference between the first image and your second one is that the forward windshield has been removed. After seeing that, I think I am sold on removing mine. |

A "Newtauk" is merely a Newport with the console of a Montauk. The RPS is centered on both models. |

The front windshield is the bomb, especially if sitting in those front seats. I have owned both and the Newtauk is the best 17' Whaler EVER made. Storage, easy to get in and out, etc. |

Its the only 17 whaler I've ever owned and i would never take the front windshield out of my newtauk, i love it. |

Jeff - If you ever considered a custom forward shelter, I'd design it so that the bottom of the shelter connected to the top of the windshield. It would let a tremendous amount of light into the shelter. D |

Lastly if you remove the windshield it will leave all that hardware there. If you remove that you will have to fill in a bunch of holes. If you do remove it, there will be a bunch lined up to buy it. Hard to ship though. |

Don, I still have the Original Toast Duck Cloth Mills forward shelter and Bimini top for the boat. I also have a windshield in the Pacific Blue sunbrella. The original Duck Cloth is pretty darn good condition but, being cotton it is getting fragile. I have never cared for the Mills design for the forward shelter on the Newport anyway so, if I do end up doing new canvas I am going to do a custom forward anyway. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v427/jeff_rohlfing/ 76%20Newport%20Near%20Complete/45c72ae5.jpg Nick, I really want to remove the forward windshield for two reason. The first is simple Aesthetics. I think it looks better sans the forward windshield (but I flip flop all the time). The second is this is an original OEM taylor made (and embossed) windshield. As you know you could never replace it. So I want to get it off and out of the sun and way from swinging anchors and people's feet. I am considering taking the Console windshield off for safe keeping as well as it is also the OEM taylor made (and embossed) windshield. UDP Plastics now makes both the Forward and Console windshields for the Newport for a fair price. A member on WC bought a set and they looked very nice for remakes. http://www.updplastics.com/boston%20whaler%20boat%20windshields.htm None the less. If I go without the windshield you can simply and cleanly fill the holes with stainless machine screws backed with nuts. |

My 1976 Newport looks very much like that, but came from the factory with a 94 quart cooler seat instead of the RPS. Instead of paying for another front windshield I removed the last one that cracked. It fits the style of boating that I do better as I stand up in that area a lot while fishing and throwing a bait net. Also removed and sold the rear deck, and seats in front of the console. Still have the front seat that bolts thru the front locker with all the hardware that I will sell someday. It's about 40 pounds I don't need up front. |

dneal33, Mine is a 1976 as well. I think we need to talk. Do you have any images of your boat as is and how it was? |

Jeff - Ah...Mills did utilize the front windscreen like I had imagined. D |

I have often wondered about how and when my Newport became a Newtauk? I know people wanted the combination of the gunwales with the center console but was it done at the dealer or the factory in 1988? What are the earliest Newtauk models? (I suspect early 80's). I suspect mine was converted later at the dealer, as I recently noticed a trace outline of where a battery might have sat in the stern at one time. Since i have owned the boat the there has always been twin batteries in the console. |

Stern batteries were very common. You would more likely notice where the Newport console mounted to the side gunwale. Most were done at the factory but Whaler can not tell you if yours was being it is only recognized as a Newport(look at title). They made roughly 3 dozen at the factory and Jax, FL dealer was the main orderer and where mine came from. If you want to know more about your hull send the stencil # to Chuck Bennet @ Whaler. |

My 1988 was dealer converted by Hansce Smythe in NJ. The story I was told had to do with a strong demand for center consoles and Newports were converted. It is a great set up. I have looked in to a bow dodger, but not from Mills. I do not like the design. |

I did not know Wally or Harry had the skills to convert a Newtauk ;) Again Chuck said the majority of factory made Newtauks were from Jax, Fl. God knows how many conversions were done, especially on a rich island like LBI that Hance & Smythe cater to. Then again I never saw one on Barnegat bay but never really knew what one was until I got mine. |

Great suggestion on emailing Chuck Bennett, he already replied and matched my stencil number to the HID. My Newport was shipped from Rockland MA to Schock Boats in Newport Beach CA in February 1988. |
