Just curious, how many of the whaler crew drive real Jeeps, the 4X4 variety. Noticed a few in pictures and stuff.

I have an '08 Wrangler Unlimited (four door) and love it. It is a sweet "beach buggy" and wife's daily driver. I have a Chevy 2500 4WD for my daily driver and boat towing duties.

When I bought my Cohasset in "87" I drove a CJ7. It was OK though in hindsight a little short on wheelbase.

I have been researching and plan to purchase a new 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport - the base 4x4 model with optional tow package. The 2012 will have the new Pentastar V6 engine which will have more HP (280-300) and improved fuel economy.

With the 3,500 Towing capacity it will tow my 15 Super Sport with ease. The Wrangler has just about everything I want in a vehicle. 4 Doors/5 Passenger, Available Manual Transmission, Convertible, High Fun Factor (plan to do some light off roading). I wish the milage would be better, but I guess I can't have it all.

I want the new Sarah Tan color, so it will closely match my Desert Tan 15 SuperSport, will be a nice looking setup for sure!

Drove by the dealer this past weekend...

I have a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD which is Mercedes Turbo-diesel engine. She is a 4x4 and trail rated. I have owned a CJ-7 And CJ-8 and this truck is good offroad. It also is great onroad and gets 30mpg. Too bad they only made them in 05&06.

I do not think the Liberty CRD is a Mercedes diesel. It is an Italian diesel... VM Motori.

A Willys Overland M38A1 for grins, the F-350 does the towing.

Owned by Mercedes and used in Mercedes overseas as we have no 4cyl diesels in the USA.

Tohsgib are you stating that the US has/makes no 4 cylinders diesels? or that there are no other 4 cylinder in the US?.... Some Old Mercedes were 4 cylinders diesels now they have come back with another one started either in 2008 or 2009, GM also made 4 cylinder diesels (4-71), do not remember if the GM's were in any cars. Isuzu Trooper had one so did the VW Rabbit. Old Toyota trucks had one and do not forget the Kubota...

The only diesel Mercedes uses in their cars/SUVs are the 6cyl also used in the Jeep Cherokee for a few years. Nobody offers a 4cyl diesel in the USA as we speak or in the past decade or more except the one in my CRD and VW's. The cost is so prohibitive to get it approved for a very low production engine. American's want power, not a fuel efficient diesel when a hybrid does the same or better with no noise/smoke.

For kicks, I like vehicles that are fast, which pretty much rules out any trucks. For towing, I just use whatever mundane yawner of a vehicle I can get a hitch on and still be within towing weight limits... which is no problem with classic Whalers and my other little boats.

I sometimes tow my 170 Montauk with a Jeep 4X4 but it's not a real Jeep. It's a 1995 Grand Cherokee Limited V8.

I tow my Nauset with a 1992 Jeep grand cherokee with a full tow package and the 4.0L straight 6; not sure if this is what you consider a "real" jeep, but it works pretty well for me. 18 MPG solo, and about 15-16 towing, not a bad tradeoff for a tow rig.

I think the shorter wheel base on a CJ series might make towing a bit sporty...

I aquired my 1967 Nauset by trading for my 1974 CJ5 from a yacht broker I found on Craigs List. I love my Whaler but sometimes miss the old jeep. I agree that pulling a boat with my cj5 would be a challenge, although plenty of power with the 304 V8 it would be prety squirly.

Most of the pre-2006 Jeep 4x4 are true jeeps to me. The grand cherokee is truly capable of 4x4 operation. I was wanting to exclude the newer jeeps which are not 4X4, some are, some are not. I drive a 2006 Wrangler Unlimited, which is the two door version of the new 4 door unlimited. Mine has a wheelbase very close to the scrambler of years past and I tow my 130 super-sport and have no problems, almost don't know it is there. When I tow my 18 foot pontoon it is a different story, Last long tow the mpg hovered around 6 mpg. I was fighting a 35 mile per hour headwind and tried to tow at 50. I would hit a gust and speed would drop to about 40. Wind load on the pontoon is extremely high. I used a full tank of gas towing it about 100 miles into the wind. It was brutal. I prefer the jeep at launch as I have no problem on the ramp even with moss on the concrete,

I was curious as most whaler owners are concerned with the safety of the whaler and I wondered if that same thinking would carry over into their autos. I carry all safety equipment in my Jeep, including first aid, fire extinguisher, tow straps, flares, on board air, winch and winch accessories, shovel, tools, and extra clothing etc. Sometimes I am thinking I am a little anal on some things.

I do not like towing my 3,000 pound 170 Montauk with the short wheel based Jeep Grand Cherokee. I have the V8 and get about 12 mpg while towing the 170 Montauk.

I have a 2006 Toyota Tundra Crew Cab. Towing the 170 Montauk with the long wheel based Tundra is like night and day. I tow 250 miles with some steep grades when I tow from Sacramento to Bodega Bay and back. I also get about 12 mpg towing with the Tundra but the rig is MUCH more stable.

I towed a 13' Sport with a 2006 Liberty CRD like Nick's. It was effortless. I also towed a 18' Outrage with a tandem axle trailer. That felt like the maximum load appropriate to the tow vehicle. Sadly a Tahoe swerved into us on the freeway and totaled the Liberty. A pity, the Liberty thought it was a junior grade Cummins, and liked to pull trailers up long grades.

I'd say Whalers and Jeeps and Harley's are iconic American vehicles.

On our third Jeep, and should be taking delivery of 2nd whaler soon:

A 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited - White - I tried to get my wife (it's her daily drive) to put a Boston Whaler sticker on the rear quarter panels :)

Before that we had a 1994 Jeep Wrangler Sahara and a 1981 Jeep Srambler (CJ8) - Red with wood side boards.

Long history of Jeeps in the family.
My Grandmother had a 1948 Willey Jeepster which my parents "courted" in the 60's, sold in the 80's and then my mother bought back for my father's 60th birthday several years ago. Now he is having it restored. Pretty neat stuff.

Dad has had Jeeps Wagoneers/Cherokee's/GC since the early 80's. Brother - Wrangler, 2 cousins -Wranglers.

My Uncle has a Whaler and had several jeeps.

Jeeps and Whalers go together pretty well, even the new 4 doors and tow most whalers up to 20' or so.

We use a Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 4.7 Quadra drive for towing our boats. We trailer on very steep ramps in the eep offers 8 differend traction types but for us the quadra drive is the most suitable since this has automatic spare differentials on the front and rear axle so always permanent REAL 4 wheel traction.

My father had a cherokee chief with quadra track.
It was amazing where that thing would go. Out of all of the stock 4wd systems I have used, that one was truly impressive. It was not bullet proof but considering what we did to it / with it, held up pretty well. On road that rig was glued to the ground; dry, wet, ice, snow, it didn't matter.

I started with a CJ-5 from the seventies then upgraded to a 1988 cherokee. after that a 1994 grandcherokee limited with lots of problems and that I still own. After that a year 2000 grand cherokee limited V-8 that was recently sold (great ride lots of power) and now a 1998 cherokee sport that I use to tow my outrage 25' with (low speed for not more then half an hour).
I love jeeps although build quality has had it ups and downs.

My 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has been great for towing the 180 Dauntless. I have had some problems with the parking brake which always make me hold my breath when on the ramp. This is the second automobile that I have owned and also the second Jeep. My first was a 1988 Wrangler which was sold before I bought the Whaler.

I still have the '93 Jeep Wranler Sport 4.0L that I bought new in the fall of 1992. I towed my Montauk with it for many years with no problems at all, and it's been one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned. I drove it cross country from MA to CA the year I bought it, and recently returned it to Cape Cod, MA for many more years of beach duty.

Before that one I owned a 1972 CJ-5 and a 1967 CJ-5. I towed my Outrage 22 Cuddy with a '99 Grand Cherokee for several years before I upsized to a 3/4 ton Suburban. I loved the Grand Cherokee, but the suspension was a little light for the Outrage when it was loaded up with the family and their gear.

Jim, did you go to your database for your answer? Or do you somehow have access to the information the black helo's and drones that spy on us acquire?

You must be counting some of the whaler crew that drive toy jeeps, or unreal jeeps...Maybe some Toyota Land Cruisers?

I occasionally tow my 17' Outrage with an 08 Rubicon 2 door. But, it's a bit of a job for that little 6, espically on a grade. Much prefer to tow with my 09 Silverado.

Total of 5 in the last 15 years. 3 Wranglers and 2 Cheerokee Sports.

Down to 2 now, a Wrangler for my second ride and a Sport for my son first car. There's plenty of Sports in the junk yards for parts when he breaks or bends something.

My first Wrangler was a 1995 four cylinder and after driving my brothers 1997 Wrangler with a six I sold mine the next day. They are great for a second change of pace ride for me. I pull the Newport with a F150 .

I tow with a 2002 liberty (16 foot classic 1971 hull) with no issues. I turn off the overdrive for hills... Great setup. The turning radius on the liberty is a huge improvement on the Cherokee, which I had before. Almost as good as the wrangler.

I tow my 67 Katama with a 1987 Jeep YJ Wrangler, 6cyl, all manual. While I may use the pickup for long hauls, I always use the jeep for moving the Whaler around the house, or to the local ramp. The smaller wheel base of the jeep (vice the pickup) makes handling alot easier in tight places.

86-90 YJ is considered one of the last "real" Jeeps with the 4.2L 112hp six and absolutely no ameneties compared to the new. I do however consider the 1991+ 180hp 4.0L a great engine and made on road driveability much more functional.

I tow my 170 Montauk with a 2005 Kia Sorento, 4x4 , 2.5L CDi. My trailer has brakes and I hardly feel the rig behind the boat except when accelerating. Tony can confirm this as he has drivin with me a couple of times.

The 91-95's shared the same YJ body style, but the fuel injected 4.0 was superior to the anemic 4.2 it replaced. No more amenities in these, unless you count reliability.

Many do not consider the 4.0 as good offroad due to its higher torque band, onroad it was a revelation. In 92 they changed the rollbar but that was pretty much it unless you were fortunate enough to be able to afford the Renegade.

I've heard that 4.0L I6 is quite a gem. If I had a Jeep from that era, I'd look for that motor. Then again, I6's are so neat from an engineering standpoint, it's probably hard to screw one up.

Many of my friends and the family mech all prefer the fuel injected 4.0. However with the carb model I have found I can easily bypass the computer, taking the engine back to a CJ7 style of control, by example manual choke and so forth.

With as many miles I have on the engine, simple makes it easier to keep running. The main block of the engine I simply can not kill (rings, pistons so on). I did lose the mech fuel pump (the cam lobe went bad) so I just installed a cheap elec fuel pump. Just for an example of something I could do with a simple system instead of the fuel injection.

While above sounds like it is alot of work to keep the old carb 6 cylinders running, I will say the old jeep has never left stranded, one way or another I have always been able to get home, even while towing a boat.

My '73 CJ-5 had the old AMC 258 ci six, and the 4.0 L in my '93 runs circles around it. The 4.0 has great low end grunt for running in the sugar fine sand of the Outer Beach, much more than the 258. Sure I could rebuild the carb from the 258 on the kitchen table of my rented cottage, but the fact is the I had to. The 4.0 has been flawless for 18 years and 110k miles. I replaced the water pump and hoses and that's it beyond cap,plugs and wires, which it probably didn't really need.

I would have to agree on the 4.0 being a better engine, when new. But on my old jeep I have lot more then 118K miles.

At 270K miles, nothing on the old 4.2 engine has had a major rebuild that I could not do myself. The main engine, rear end, transmission and so on have had their oil changes, nothing more.

Everyone I know does prefer the fuel injected package, I was just pointing out that once you get over 2k miles on the jeep, computers, electronics and so on start going bad. Those items I cannot fix easily myself. A simple carb, old throttle cable and so on.... no problem. But Andy, You are correct on rebuilding the carb because you had to (wistful grin). In the console I always keep a can of carb cleaner to blow out the jets if they plug up while out in the woods.

Anyway, I would have to agree with the original post, Jeeps and Whalers do seem to go together.

We have an 08 JK Rubicon 2 door. We have been towing our 17' Outrage with it. But, Our recently acquired 205 Eastport won't be spending any time behind the Jeep. So, from now on the Jeep will be for fun only.
