OK--This is a completely gratuitous posting--nothing at all to do with boating. I got a link to this very-viral video yesterday. It is shot from a Corvette Z06 which is chasing a Ford GT40 on Detroit expressways at 230-KPH (145-MPH). As they weave through traffic they pass a guy pulling a boat on a trailer. (It's about 5:14 in the timeline.) Otherwise watch this amazing five minutes of freeway driving. "The greatest American roads cars built in the last 100 years are together on a Detroit Highway,"" says the cameraman in the case car. I know a few guys have blown past me while I was in the right lane towing my boat, but nothing like this. Enjoy the driving. |

I would like to disapprove, but this video reminds me of the dessert I had last night after our crab and turkey feast--bread pudding with caramel sauce, chocolate tort, raspberries with clotted cream, and a couple of cups of espresso so thick and creamy it coulda been used as caulk. Have you ever driven the autobahns in Germany, Jim? Left lanes are (or were way back when) wide open, no speed limit. Driving them (in the right lanes, unfortunately, for me) was like attending the best car show in the world, watching Ferraris, Lamborghinis, high-end Porsches, BMWs, Mercedes, etc screaming by on your left. Yummy!, but my oh my...the carbon footprint ;-) Thanks for a nice, guilt-ridden dessert. Tony (...who got his first speeding ticket in 20 years a couple of months ago--87 mph on a 55 mile-per-hour local two lane highway in my new diesel Jetta, two bikes on its rack and a very, very cranky wife riding shotgun. That little dessert, BTW, cost me $400 including traffic school.) |

That was Awesome! Thanks Jim. Just what I needed while freaking out on the (Ford) RaptorForumz, reading about all of the members who ordered their 2011 Raptors a month after I did, and theirs are in production. I have not even been assigned a VIN yet! Of course my dealer can't explain any of it. "Don't believe anything you read on the web". Right. Just venting. zotcha. |

I like how he mentions that Ford's chief designer is driving the GT40 (I wonder if he'll get a note from his boss!), and how the GT40 has it's right blinker on for about two minutes. I guess when you're going that fast you've got other things to think about. John K. |

At one point in the video, they pass another high-end sports car that is in the leftmost lane. I don't know if that's a Nissan GT-R or what...but I admire that guy's restraint in not joining the chase. I'd also like to cluck my disapproval because of how dangerous and irresponsible they're being...but it does make a cool video. That said - I'm of the school of thought that the police should drive on by after these guys get pasted into a bridge abutment...but that's why I'm not a law enforcement officer... |

Fun to watch, but it's easy to imagine how many people could have died at their hands. I hope the cops get them. I was stopped on one of the Detroit interstates when I was doing 85, about 10 MPH slower than EVERYONE else. I explained this to the officer, and he said "yeah I know," and let me go. We were in our Taurus station wagon. |

Party Pooper or not, I'll gladly wear the badge if it avoids tragedies from similar stupidity like this: http://www.firstcoastnews.com/news/news-article.aspx?storyid=144473 There is a world-class track facility (Brooklyn Motor Speedway) less than an hour from the location where this video was shot. These individuals clearly have enough money to afford some track time to run their high-powered machines. Go to the track, have fun and burn rubber. I'm with Dave on this one. And I hate being a wet towel. It's one thing to be traveling at high speed on good roads, in light traffic, sharing the roadway with other drivers that have been through more intensive licensing standards. Like the Autobahn. But even the Autobahn has it's share of problems, even with automotive engineers behind the wheel: http://www.globalmotors.net/ 911-prototype-testing-goes-wrong-fatal-accident-on-the-autobahn/ However, it's total disregard for a lot of others lives, driving like they did on I94 through a portion of Detroit, during the day. I can't imagine how many calls both Detroit PD and the regional dispatch centers got during that run. Aside from Pat, how many have you zipped up a bag like at 3:48 in the following video (be prepared, and don't say I didn't warn you): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2mf8DtWWd8 Or had to deliver "the" message: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXRNZYR94lg We are considering requiring the viewing of the "20 year" video mandatory for any alcohol related conviction. I loved the pass on the far right shot.... It also reminds me of one of my first trips to LA when I was on the San Bernadino 2 am, cruise set at 85, surfer nephew in passenger seat when I spot two sets of headlights in the rearview, scan down to the instrument panel, microsecond worry about my speed V possibility of cops on my A%#, scan back to the mirror, headlights now just off my port bumper and VAAAROOOOOMMMMM! a Ferrari and Porsche blow by us like we're standing still, stuck in traffic. Instant infusion of adrenalin, mash down on the throttle and my nephew yawns "Night riders, they come out and race their super cars on the freeways at night...." Take me back for just one week!!! I guess I am late to the party on the 2006 video. Thanks for the other links. I agree--it is totally reckless driving. I do find it a bit amazing because, as Pat noted, the road surface of I-94 is terrible. The constant beating from heavy trucks makes that stretch very rough. I have trouble going 55-MPH through there. Also, the boat being passed looks like it has a Yamaha four-cycle. I don't recognize the hull. --jimh |

I'm surprised so many of you approve of this driving. I admit in my youth I have driven fast, but when I went over 150 MPH no one else was on the road to be harmed. Having driven those expressways, I have seen drivers make some real stupid lane changes.Had some driver unexpectedly changed lanes on that day the video would be spectacular in a different way, no matter how skilled the drivers were. I was in Montana last month and on the expressways the speed limit was 75 mph. |

Part of my attraction to the video is that it records an even that took place on roads I drive all the time. If not for that I probably would not be nearly as interested in it. In c.1974 I used to live Connecticut, in Fairfield County, which was so up-scale that it actually had two Ferrari dealerships, one in Greenwich and one in Westport. Early one Sunday morning I was cruising along at the posted speed limit, 55-MPH, on the beautiful MERRITT PARKWAY, a curvy, scenic, limited-access road. I was passed by two Ferraris which had to be going 150-MPH or more. They both went by me in a flash. Alas, now I am so accustomed to driving 55-MPH when hauling the boat that I seldom drive much faster than that when in my car. Driving faster takes more attention and effort, and I am content to roll along at 55-MPH. |

I still enjoy driving to and from theTappan Zee viathe Merritt Parkway. So much more scenic than I95 through Bridgeport. It takes some of the stress out of the drive. The gas prices are the highest I see from Boston to Florida on that route. I can not imagine the cost of living there. |

The Merritt Parkway is renowned for its many overpass bridges, no two alike. It is one of the greenest, tree lined parkways I have ever driven. It was also notorious during its construction, for the political tangles that ensued. These were affluent communities in which the parkway was being built and they were not anxious for the construction and the ensuing noise and local traffic. It has more hills and curves than a modern day freeway. I can't imagine getting up to 150 mph on that road. |

I am sure the Ferraris Jim describes were not going 150 MPH just as the Ford GT (and Corvette chase car) is obviously not going 145 MPH. A car exceeding 100 MPH on a public road is very fast and yes, it will seem like it goes by you in a flash. |

As a guy who has lost two close family members in motor vehicle accidents I am compelled to respond. To do anything but condemn the actions of those two drivers in the video is reprehensible. My wife's mother was killed by a motorist driving in excess of 100 mph while she was sitting at a stoplight. A beloved aunt was killed by a car operating "at high speed" that lost control and crossed the median on an interstate and hit her head on. These guys are irresponsible idiots that belong in jail. |

I know how fast those cars accelerate. It's just crazy to be driving that fast on public road with that traffic around. In car video of high speed driving also tends to make the speed slower than it really is. If you think it look fast on Video, it was probably a lot more intense in person. |

It's against the law to drive faster than the speed limit, but people do it all the time. Now we are arguing about now much faster than the speed limit you have to drive in order to be a real law breaker. As someone who usually drives at the speed limit, I can tell you that almost everyone on the road drives above the speed limit--because they're all passing me. |
lizard |
posted 12-01-2010 10:44 AM ET (US)
I don't think we are talking about "how fast above the speed limit" one has to be going to break the law. I think the sheer idiocy of traveling at such an excessive speed on a public road is what we are discussing. These drivers had no regard for the other cars on the roadway, who might have had a fraction of second to respond, when encountering these vehicles. Ego can lead you to make poor decisions. These two drivers are a prime example. |

I recently had opportunity to pass through the Canadian Province of Ontario on my way to an excellent Thanksgiving feast. The route I took led me on the 402 - a very straight, flat and smooth highway that connects with the 401 in London, Ontario. I also took the 403 toward Hamilton and then the QEW to St. Catharine's/Niagara Falls. The generally highway speed limit in Ontario is 100 Kilometers per hour. Each time I changed highways - shortly after entering the highway - I encountered a large dark blue sign with yellow letters. The sign informed motorists that being caught driving 50 kph over the limit (about 95 mph) would result in a minimum $10,000 CDN fine, immediate (roadside) vehicle seizure and immediate license revocation. It appears that Michigan needs such a sign. |

I actually get scared driving them on the highway of getting arrested...just nowhere around where i am for that kind of speed im a step 13 my insurance is high enough.... fastest I've ever operated a vehicle was 160 at 4am... two corvettes and not a single other car in sight..and even then is scary things just come up to fast to drive like that on public roads.... fun to watch but not for me, I like my license! |

Jeff, I never said the Cigarettes were the fastest boats out there but the Donzis' and the Cigarettes went fast for their day, especially the early boats built in the 60`s, and were the first of their kind, and influenced fast boat design for the next 45 or so years. We can thank Don Aronow for them, unfortinuatly he burned the candle at both ends and paid the price. I can`t drive fast cars. A friend let me drive his '94 Viper 10 years ago and I got pulled over before I went 3 miles. Fortunately I was able to talk the man out of a ticket. I then promptly returned the car. I had a ride in a Spec Miata for about 10 laps around Sebring last year Top speed on the long straight was 121mph. Going through the corners was fun. Speed on the water is alot more fun though. Hope to ride in zotcha`s Jersey Skiff some day. |

If someone is driving 85-MPH on a expressway--which is actually fairly common these days--and another car is driving 55-MPH, the speed difference is 30-MPH. The car driving 55-MPH is within the legal speed limit. The car driving 85-MPH is not. In the same way, a guy driving 100-MPH has a 30-MPH differential to someone driving 70-MPH. The car driving 70-MPH is within the legal speed limit. The car driving 100-MPH is not. If I posted a video of a guy driving 85-MPH there probably would not be much outrage about it, but, from my point of view as a 55-MPH driver, the everyday guy weaving through everyday traffic at 85-MPH is just as much of threat to me as someone driving (as this video shows) at 100-MPH is to the people going 70-MPH. There's the same 30-MPH differential. I spend a lot of time on the highway going 55-MPH pulling my boat, and there seems to be no end to the people who want to drive 85-MPH to get around me. The really fast boats, like the ones shown in the linked videos people have contributed to this discussion, provide one of the few chances for someone to drive really fast without breaking the law, as long as they do it in open water. I don't know of any speed restrictions for the open water of the ocean or the Great Lakes. If you have a boat that can go really fast, you are welcome to go really fast in most situations, as long as you are in open water. |

Jimh, I`m only surmising this, but from what I`ve seen on I-75 in Florida with a 70mph speed limit, if you are driving 85-90mph and weaving through traffic, the State Cops will not mess with you, perhaps becuase of the danger to themselves and other motorists. However, if you are driving such as I was at 80mph, alone with no traffic around, they will nail you for 10 over. Maybe law enforcement types will comment on this. <"((>{ |
