We've been going to the Santa Cruz Lighted Boat Parade every year since we've lived here, and long talked about entering Namequoit in the event. At last year's parade, I promised the kids that 2010 would be the year, and today I made good on that promise.

Over the last few weekends, I borrowed a nifty Honda generator, built a little platform for it straddling the motor well, and began stringing lights. Today the atmosphere at the harbor was festive, and I had a good time finishing off the job while sharing beers, chili and hot wings with my neighbors across the dock who were also getting their boat dressed up for the parade. The theme this year was Under a Starry Night, and I made sure to incorporate plenty of lit stars into Namequoit's display.

Friends came down to join us, Nancy and the kids arrived a little while later, and we all enjoyed some clam chowder and sourdough bread while the Christmas music played on the stereo. At 5:30 we motored down the harbor and joined the parade, being sure to put on an enthusiastic show each time we passed the judge's dock. There were all manner of craft participating, from stand up paddlers (SUPs), go-fast sailboats, power cruisers, dinks, and even some fire breathing dragon kayaks (really). We had a great time and all of us thought the Whaler looked pretty good. Afterwards, we had a round of hot toddies and headed over to the Santa Cruz Yacht Club (who puts on the event) to see who won and check out the slide show. As we walked in the door, we saw that our dock neighbor Walt had won second place in the Powerboat Under 27' division. A second later the screen showed Andy Gere and Namequoit as the winner! My jaw dropped, and Bobby and I ran up to collect our prize, which included a gift certificate to our favorite harborside restaurant (The Crow's Nest) and a pair of tickets for a cruise on the Chardonnay, a 70 foot sailing yacht that charters out of our harbor.

Here are a few snapshots of the boat and crew on a very memorable night. Happy Holidays Whalers!

Andy- Congratulations. What a great time that must have been.

Someday, I am going to buy your boat, when you step up to your Outrage 25 cuddy.

As I have stated in many posts at this website, it's my always-humble opinion that the most beautiful boats ever produced by Boston Whaler are the 22-ft and 25-ft Outrage cuddys, and Andy's is as nice as they get. I've had the pleasure of seeing 'Namequoit' on at least half-a-dozen occasions over the past half-decade or so, mostly in fairly calm conditions at Whaler rendezvous in the Sacramento Delta and the San Francisco Bay, but once running alongside her in somewhat lumpy conditions outside the Golden Gate during a Whaler dealership-sponsored salmon derby (coincidentally, I was in CW member Royce's Outrage 25 cuddy during that event). The boat seems to handle the sea like a dream.

I've always been jealous of the way Andy has managed to keep his craft in immaculate condition even though he keeps his undoubtedly utilitarian, fish-killing machine in a Santa Cruz slip, and uses her hard and often in various capacities (fishing, long offshore cruises, and now as a prize-winning beauty queen). His decision to repower with an E-TEC outboard has been a success, and his major alteration/addition to the craft--the canvas/isinglass semi-enclosed T-top--is a well-thought-out, attractive and useful modification, perfectly suited to our northern California conditions.

I've got first dibs, Liz, but I'm afraid that my clumsy hands and somewhat lazy approach to maintenance would be an insult to Andy's beautiful Whaler. Congratulations and well-deserved, old friend!

Well, my dear friend Tony, we'll have to see on the "dibs" thing. I sent Andy an email long ago "suggesting" as his kids got bigger he'd need the 25 and I was lined up to go.

Perhaps I can buy you off by selling you my 18, not as pristine as Andy's 22. Then you will have gone full circle :)

Unfortunately for the both of us, I don't think Andy intends to sell.

Guys,
Thanks for the kind words, and it's true, it will be a long time before Namequoit and I part ways, if ever.

The parade was a really fun event, and my 6-year old son is taking great pride in the fact that we won. He and I cut our Christmas Tree in the rain today, then went down to the harbor to button up a few things on the boat. I left things lit up on shore power, and he was so excited as we drove down the harbor driveway and he spotted her glowing in the distance. After we finished our chores in the rain (he didn't want to wait in the truck, he came aboard to help) we enjoyed a little celebration dinner at the Crow's Nest, tasting a bit of the fruits of our labor by a warm fire.

I found this snapshot of Namequoit on a local website that had a small slideshow of the parade. The photo doesn't really do it justice, but you get the idea. I think taking good photographs of moving lighted boats is darn near impossible. The website will refresh a few times before it lands on a photo of my little Whaler.

Can't wait to seem some photos of the tug...

Congratulations.

The 22 looks really sharp.
They do something similar down on the Sacramento River that I would like to take our 18 to.

Andy- That is an event that your son is unlikely to forget and engenders his interest in boating (which I am sure he already has, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree).

I'll be out there in my classic 13 on Sunday, at the Santa Barbara Christmas boat parade. There is even a _slight_ chance that I might bring a spare battery and an inverter and run some lights m'self. Most likely though I won't and, I'll have all 6 legal seats claimed by spectators. It'll still be fun.

That sure is one lit up Boston Whaler! Now my kids are asking me why mine doesn't have fairy lights! Nice! and congrats on the win.

Been raining in the NW for 4 days now, Xmas lights will have to wait Andy. What gen set are you using?

I guess most of the Northern folks are experiancing the white version of the same flying ocean (dense rain) that drifted over us. You guys take care, if it warms up there as quickly as it did here...the melt off may be worse.

Sorry to hear that it's raining on your parade, literally. I used a Honda EU2000 generator, and boy was that a sweet little machine. I made a wooden platform that spanned between my transom and splashwell dam just starboard of the outboard, and strapped the generator to it with some webbing straps. Quiet as a church mouse, and started up on the second pull. It had enough juice for a lot more lights...and I'll have them for next year!
