To all my CW friends and acquaintances--here's a holiday gift I hope many of you have a chance to enjoy:Don't miss "A Mystery in Alaska" on PBS/Nature. It's shown at different times in different locations (and sadly, since it's brand new, I don't think that it will be available as a free online replay for one year...at least I couldn't find it this morning when I tried to link it to this website). Google <PBS Nature> and use their capable search engine with your location and cable provider to find times to view it on your TV. It's well worth the extra effort. I promise that y'all will be amazed at the photography, and if you look closely you'll find a Whaler in at least two segments.
Don't be put off by the somewhat sterile blurb describing the documentary on the Nature webpage: ("An examination of the decline in sea lions off the Alaskan coast. Suspected factors include diet; changes in climate and ocean conditions; unusual feeding by whales; and pollution.") The program is much more than that, with stunning footage of steller sea lions, various fish, whales, birds, and bears, taken underwater, on the surface, and against the incredibly beautiful backdrop of coastal southern Alaska. The theme--an investigation of the sudden decline of the steller sea lion population off the Alaskan coast--provides an opportunity to examine the interrelated web of existence on our planet.
If you get the chance, get your kids and grandkids to watch this documentary. And from an old sceptic like me, Merry Christmas and my best regards to all here for the holidaze. C'mon spring!
