Topic: How many spark plugs do you own?

A friend of mine passed away recently and his test of manhood was how many spark plugs you own. Surprisingly, if you add up all the cars, boat(s), lawn equipment, even the chainsaw, you can get up there pretty quick. I think my count reached somewhere in the 60 to 70 spark plugs range. He was up to almost 200. I think he died a happy man!

Not sure that jets and diesels count-gotta have an actual spark plug. other toys are just a bonus! |

About 30 including chainsaw, snow blowers, outboards, lawn mowers. I never thought to audit my spark plug usage. |

Jets have igniters and some diesels have glow plugs. They should count. There was a time when some engines had dual spark plugs and dual magnetos for redundancy. Perhaps aircraft engines I can only count 23 active spark plugs in my collection. Last month it would have been 34 but we sold the motorhome. Butch |

Jefecinco, you are correct about the dual spark plugs/magnetos/distributors on the aircraft engines, also old Suzuki Outboards, WW2 Tanks, 40's-50's Fire Engines.Active: Spark Plugs 32, 15 Glow Plugs, Non active: 6 on cards, 8 in a box...

My quick count comes to 45 active plugs dispersed over approximately 1413 HP.19 that float (603.5 HP) 18 that drive (750 HP) 9 that maintain (59.5 HP) Was surprised to see that the drive plugs have the highest average HP per plug at a near 42 HP per plug. Float plugs come in a distant second at approximately 32 HP per plug. Not surprising that the maintain plugs bring up the rear with an average HP per plug under 7. |

Yeah, because the electricity to run your electric motors could not possibly have come from coal, gas, or oil-fired powerplants. -Peter |

I have 52. But it really should be referred to as cylinders. Since this has turned into a test of manhood, how many do you actually maintain yourself, start to finish? Kind of separates the men from the boys. Paying someone to maintain all of the cylinders just doesn't seem quite right but maybe I'm just jealous of those who can afford to. Capability means a lot to me. I like knowing that I can do it and choose to do it. |

Following JimH's penchant to be technically accurate, the following is offered for your consideration:(1) a MOTOR converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. (2) an ENGINE (gasoline or diesel)is the conversion of a chemical reaction into mechanical energy (exploding fuel). Literally, we hang outboard ENGINES on our boats -- a motor may or may not start them. We also hang troller MOTORS on our boats, but then again, that satisfies the definition of (1) above. Only an ENGINE would require a spark plug. (OK, to be precise, a gasoline engine), but it is the conversion process that makes diesels engines, not motors.) Just because we misuse a word (including manufacturers) does not make it technically correct. Case in point: Banks do not LOAN money, they LEND it. The resultant financial transaction is a LOAN. And don't even get me started about the misuse of Anti-Cavitation plates versus the real item, Anti-Ventilation plates . . . . Peace Out --- WhalerAce Quick defintions below: DC Motors A direct current (DC) motor uses DC power to create a magnetic field and convert electrical energy into mechanical energy. DC motors are commonly either brushed or brushless, using the process of commutation to switch the direction of the electrical current, thereby creating an alternating current from the DC power source. AC Synchronous Motor An AC synchronous motor is a motor driven by alternating current (AC) in which the motor rotor spins at a multiple of the line frequency and the number of pairs of poles that create the magnetic field. Unlike an induction motor, a synchronous motor has zero slip associated with its operation. Syncronous motors are constant-speed motors and are therefore very efficient at converting AC power to mechanical work. The two types of AC synchronous motors are nonexcited and DC-excited. Diesel Engine A diesel engine is an internal combustion engine that utilizes diesel fuel injected into the combustion chamber to spark the engine. Diesel engines have very high compression ratios, high thermal efficiency, and can be manufactured in two-stroke or four-stroke configurations.

Hmm, luxury magnets in my pistons and electro magnets imbedded in the aluminum cylinderheads. Turn on and off, repelling eachother, just like a spark plug but no fuel or ignition, creating comparable power and torque, turning an alternator to power batteries and a high tech electrical convertor to start this process all over again. Guess who has no fuel related issues? No smoke or combustion noise... This is not your neighbors EFI : )

I come up with 82 plugs/cylinders. All pleasure plugs, no business plugs. All outboards are on Whalers. Owning Merc 6 cylinder outboards and V8 Caddys pays off in this particular race.No maintenance plugs, as I own Condos. That has freed up my time for boating and maintaining trailer queens. |

I don't know about this motor/engine distinction. the largest manufacturers of internal combustion engines refer to them as motors (GM and Toyota), the Government refers to them vis a vis the DMV (Dept. of Motor vehicles) and Merriam_Webster, Dictionary.com and the Encyclopaedia Brittanica reference motors as: [quote]Definition of MOTOR, Merriam-Webster 1: one that imparts motion; specifically : prime mover 2: any of various power units that develop energy or impart motion: as a : a small compact engine b : internal combustion engine; especially : a gasoline engine c : a rotating machine that transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy 3: motor vehicle; especially : automobile — mo·tor·dom \-dəm\ noun — mo·tor·less \-ləs\ adjective See motor defined for English-language learners »bold is my emphasis Electric Motors are defined as such, electric motors. |

I know that Ford Motor Company is working on electric vehicles, but it's been a MOTOR company for all these years while its products ran on fossil fuels. Perhaps "motor" and "engine" are somewhat interchangeable in the marketplace. |
