The weekend of January 1, 2011, the Great Lakes was treated to a winter blow that swept through the area. Shipping on the lakes has not yet shut down for the season, so the WILFRED SYKES http://www.boatnerd.com/pictures/fleet/sykes.htm was plying her way along Lake Michigan when the storm hit. With wind gusts at 75+MPH, the lake was worked into quite a tempest. The WILFRED SYKES is a 671' Ore Carrier with a 70' beam. I don't know exactly how high her deck is, or if she was loaded or not during this storm. What I do know, is that from the perspective of a Boston Whaler, she is a VERY big boat. Here she is in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin last summer: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=31569644&l=c425efbfc9& id=1383963684 Here is a video of what it looked like that afternoon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_7FmgK7Wm0 "They" say that the big lake trout in Lake Michigan go deep in the middle of the lake and if you could get out there, they'd be hungry. Footage like that is one of two things that keep me off the lake in the Winter. The second is the shifting shoreline ice pack. http://blog.ratestogo.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/lake-michigan.jpg |

And I've been moping around all morning because the weather in So. Cal. is supposed to deteriorate Sunday when I take the Outrage out. Cloudy with light winds and temps in the low 60's. |

Insane footage! I have never been to the great lakes nor have I seen them in all their fury. Now I get it...some serious conditions there! Thanks for sharing that. |

Nice picture, but far from the largest ships that ply the Great Lakes. I watch these ships from my office most of the year. The largest are one's such as the Walter J. McCarthy. Specs include 1000' length and 105' beam. Now that's a ship!! http://www.americansteamship.com/fleet/mv-walter-mccarthy.php |
