There may soon be a lot of storm damaged boats on the Australian East Coast market. Cyclone Yasi has been upgraded to Category Five, and it's reported to be much worse then Katrina. http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/floodrelief/how-cyclone-yasi-compares-around-the-world/story-fn7ik2te-1225998762870 Please say a little prayer for the folks on the East coast.Weather is just crazy at the moment, Cyclone Bianca was at Category Four approaching Perth this past weekend, but lucky for us it just fizzled out. |

Those of us on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico are particularly aware of the great harm done by typhoons. I hope for a last minute change of course and that no one is harmed by that monster. Butch |

Yeah Tony, just like water draining down the sink. |

Hmmm...... what happened to Tony's post? |

I think that's a myth, Alfred, though I believed it for many years. The Coriolis effect, which causes hurricanes north of the Equator to spin counter-clockwise and cyclones south of the Line to spin clockwise, apparently has no effect on water swirling down a drain. And yeah, Jim, what the hell happened to my last post with the satellite photo of Yasi? Tony |

I have "Rellies" who live in Cairns. My Stepdad's first cousins. All great people. Lost thier house 2 or 3 years ago in that storm. New house has raised foundation so they were not damaged with last months flooding. Retired pepper farmers live right on the shoreline. Great Barrier reef is near. They have visited us twice in past 10 years, I havent been able to go there. Now Yasi, category 5 cyclone hitting this morn. mk |

It's just been downgraded to Cat 4, but they still reckon that this one will last 2 days due to it's sheer size. http://www.abc.net.au/news/events/cyclone-yasi/ I'm turning in, it's 1.25am, will update in the morning. |

Glad they downgraded it (not that it will mean a lot to the people directly in its path). Tony - you mean that the water in the Southern Hemisphere doesn't drain in the opposite direction? That's a myth? Man. That was one of my most important experiments to perform upon my one-day arrival in Aussie-land. |

Down to Cat 2 and no fatalities, so that is good news! Lots of damage though. http://www.abc.net.au/emergency/cyclone/yasi/ 3 babies born during the storm, one in a evac center with a 1000 people in it, delivered by a tourist midwife. |

Getting reports in, that there are several boats up to a mile inland. |

I too was sad when the old myth was debunked, Dave. To show how our (my!) easily-deceived minds work, when my wife and I visited New Zealand a couple of years ago, I pontificated about the Coriolis effect and showed her how the water was swirling around in a clockwise direction in the sinks and toilets of our exchange home in the Bay of Islands. Now, certainly not for the first time, I feel like an idiot for holding on to that superstition for most of my life. Here's some information from that great fact-checking website, Snopes: Much more important than this discussion, however, is the good early news about the relatively small number of deaths and personal injuries caused by this massive storm down under. Hope it holds. Thanks for the continuing reports, Alfred, and good luck to our friends in the beautiful Land of Oz. Tony What DID happen to that satellite photo of the storm approaching Cairns, Jim...and why? |

No power to the area but should be restored soon, so most computers will be down. Good news is that there were no storm related deaths, all missing persons have been accounted for, sadly, there was a death, one person ran a generator in an enclosed space....... Good that the town folks took the cyclone warning seriously and most evacuated. The storms' approach slowed, letting the tide go out, original forecast was for it to hit at high tide! Tidal surge was only 7.5 meters, so there was some flooding, but not as bad as the floods 6 weeks ago. Heavy damage though, the east coast lost the entire banana crop and most of the sugar. Very heavy destruction of boats in a most marinas. Towboater your rellies should be safe, but I don't know about the extent of the damage they have. In the towns that took the direct hit, one in 3 houses were destroyed. All suffered damage to some degree.

Ah, Perth. I used to love to contact other radio amateurs in Perth. It seemed like about as far away as you could get. |

Wasn't it Yeats that said, “The innocent and the beautiful have no enemy but time," Jim? I posted a link to a satellite photo of Yasi approaching the east coast of Australia, and briefly commented on the fact that the cyclone was spinning in a clockwise direction. My post disappeared that same day, and Alfred and I wondered what happened to it. I thought maybe it had been dumped because of some sort of copyright violation. A mystery, it seems. Tony |

No mystery Tony, Jim was editing the thread when you posted the link and it inadvertently got lost. This happens quite often. |

THx for the update Alfred. Ive been able to find photo's and info on Tully and Innisfal, similar to your link, nothing on Kurrimine. No deaths reported is incredible, wtg Au. As of this Monday eve Feb 7, 5 days, still no word from the Rellies. They rebuilt after Larry, 50 ft off the beach, recently retired... mk |

Towboater - have confirmed that several power towers went down in the storm, so power to certain areas will take a minimum of a couple of weeks. We still get damage reports on the news, so I will update if I hear anything about Kurrimine. |

Rellies checked back briefly this morn. They are well, had some damage but not bad compared to Larry.
