I finally splashed her today, 3 weeks after picking her up from fishnff/Brian. I did take her for a test drive with Brian before I bought her, but it was dead calm and flat, and foggy, in the San Francisco Bay that day. Today, in her new home of Santa Barbara, it was 5-7 feet ocean swell and rising, with 15-25 knots out of the northwest and 3-foot wind swells. Not quite white caps though. All I can say is, WOW. It's handling and ride and seaworthiness blew me away for what still amounts to a little skiff without a sharp, "wavesplitter" hull like a Grady. It was better than I thought... a lot better. I've always liked Whalers (or I wouldn't be here), but this has been a re-affirmation in a big way. I'm not foolish enough to overlook the role of the upright driving position in the comfort... especially mine with the taller console :) As you can see in the pics: https://picasaweb.google.com/pcrussell50/WhalerAlertMontauk17# Conditions reminded me a _little_ of Tony's pics and some of you 'Lakers when the swells cause nearby boats to disappear. Not as bad as I've seen from some of you guys, but big for me as a newish boater. I forgot there was a drain in the anchor locker, so my throwable flotation cushion got soaked as did my fire extinguisher, that I later found, I already had one in the console of the boat. I noticed that the anchor locker has a "notch" so you can keep the anchor and most of the rope in it, but still have rope run out of the locker, attached to the bow lug, while still being able to close the locker... neato! -Peter |
