Between the 3....... Outrage Ribside, Outrage smooth side, or Montauk? and why?

I'd take an Outrage ribside any day... because it is the most unique.

Everyone will have their own opinions for sure. The Ridsides are the most unique and while it is a love them or hate them with the classic owners those that love them are willing to spend the money to get them. Also, the Ribsides I think have the most "yacht like" quality to them. This makes them true show pieces when in perfect like new condition. The Smoothside Outrage and the Montauk have the Classic Whaler look to them but, it is much more a functional look than the Ribside. No matter what the Montauk is the bread and butter of the Classic Whaler world so, that would I guess make them the most desirable from the volume stand point. From a desirability stand point of a trophy piece, the Ribside is what I would think is the most desirable. Of course the asking / selling price of a "trophy" Ribside is going to be the highest of them all.

More desireable, more unique or easiest to sell? Ribside is definately the most unique. Many here say they would love to own one but that is classic Whaler owners and many who have never owned one. Personally they are ugly and hence why they were only made a couple years. Second the wood work is a pain and they have no built in gas tank. Putting a V6 on one with a couple 18 gal tanks will get you to the inlet but maybe not home at 10-12 GPH at cruise. Many pros and cons. Smoothside is more modern, more functional and easier to maintain and hence why I own one. Montauks are the most desirable and hence why they sold a million of them and they command the most money in the 16/17 foot line even though the Newport and other models cost more when new.

If you are going to buy one to use as a Mascot to show off wood, etc...ribside. If you are going to make some custom stuff and try and market it or sell it...Montauk. Not many people need wood or "bling" for banana hulls as there are not that many left on the planet worth refurbishing. People always need products for their 17's.

Ps...Montauks will command more money than both a smoothside & ribside even though they cost much more new and are much larger. They are getting stronger probably due to rarity but their prices are still weak compared to a nice Montauk.

Their short live was not due to the public's feelings of Aesthetics of the boat. The small production run was due to the difficulty of production. Bob Dougherty fought Dick Fisher over the design of that hull because he knew it would be very difficult to pull out of the molds. After a short run the shop staff put up such a stink to Dick about the problems of releasing the part from the mold that Fisher gave in and said, Fine let Bob do whatever he wants. - I learned about this story from talking to Bob Dougherty about the Ribside hull at the 2008 Miami Boat Show.

From a utilitarian standpoint - smooth side Outrage.

The rib side is nice but for my taste has too much wood, the console is too large, fuel tanks take up deck space, no anchor locker on the forward deck, and if driven by someone who is not careful those rib could catch a pier and be damaged.

I like the Outrage over the Montauk simply because there is far more room for a boat that isn't that much heavier and doesn't require that much more horsepower.

As a dive boat (or for anyone who works over the side a lot) the smooth Outrage is ideal - low bulwarks/freeboard, super stable, and plenty of deck space for gear.

I was just curious if continuous wave members had a preference.
We are currently creating a couple of "Nautical Lumber" 40th Anniversary Ribside Models.
We will be Look forward to holding an open house and letting those of you who are interested check them out.
We made a couple of nice changes. We raised the height of the console 4" by re-manufacturing the fiberglass console to include the 4" increase. (So, no big block of wood at the bottom.) Added a custom Gage panel to the topside of the console for easy viewing.
What do you CW members think of a classic style windshield on the console??
We are also adding 4" in height to the seat.
We are adding more teak trim to give it more of a "Yacht Quality" appearance.

regards,
Mike

While they may not be as practical, I really like the funky look and shape of the Ribside.

BTW - I saw the customized console at N.L. and it looks good.
