This is just what we need, more red ink to our wallets.

Who wants to bet that in the spirit of NAFTA the Canadians impose reciprocal fees"?

The Canadians will just have to pay a bit more to come over for decent healthcare.

Only about C$5.38 today. I can handle that. I get that back and more at the first liquor store.
Larger concern is announcement that ethanol will soon be added to regular ( but not mid or high octane fuels ) gas in my area. Now I need to review all the old posts to see what I need to do to prevent my 2-stroke Yammie, lawn mower, brush cutter, generator, chain saw, car, van ,etc from destruction.

Just FOX NEWS gibberish. The key word in the article is "proposed". What it got to do with boating anyhow. You should go boating in the country you live in.

Foghorn,

Your liqour store comment had me thinking you were driving in to the US. Is that correct? The article in the link states sea and air arrivals would be exposed to the fee. Just want to confirm if they're collecting it on any and all border crossings...?

$5.38 CAD, wow. Many of the ski hills in Northern Michigan used to have a Canadian week late in the season, gave all the Canadians par for their dollar, great deal years ago. No reason to come over for par dollars now, and the extra $5.38 on top of it all doesn't help.

Yes, Moose, I travel to Montreal and sometimes go via the U.S for a change of scenery and shopping malls.

Fees like this are typically charged only where you need a ticket. I.E. air and ferries. That way, the private business providing the transportation must add the fee to your ticket, becoming an unpaid tax collector. I doubt you will see the day that I roll up to the U.S. border crossing in my car, and hand the border guard my passport and a US$100 bill to cover my $5.50 security fee. Consider the implications of that, as well as the reluctance of an armed and very serious U.S. border guard to becoming a tax collector.
What's this got to do with boating, Binkster? Nada. But I did once arrive at a U.S. port on a sailboat, and the captain ( whom I did not know, having just signed on as crew for the voyage ) when asked by the border guard if we had any guns aboard, answered " Vell, I haff a machine gun under zee floor boards " ( accent was real ) The situation became quite tense for a few minutes.

It is not unusual to have to pay a fee to leave a country. If my memory is correct, we had to pay something like $20 in order to leave Barbados a few years ago. You can enter for free, but leaving costs you a fee. By the way, it was worth $20 to get out of Barbados. I think this is why people are glad to pay it.

I've paid a departure or exit fee/tax, whatever it was called, in Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, and probably a few other places. If I recall correctly they collected it as we entered even though it was clearly an exit charge. As I remember it, they were all fairly stiff fees, $15 - $40.

One uniformed man collecting the money told us they were actually doing us a favor taking our money on the way in before we spent it or were robbed. Welcome to Grenada folks!

The reason I brought this up is because of recreational boating on the Great Lakes, particularly Georgian Bay and the North Channel. With the NEXUS program boaters can do Port of Entry processes over the phone, without seeing a live border agent. Canada has had a phone check-in system in place for years, this could change that to having designated POE facilities that one would have to go through.

Chile charged me $100 to enter. They said the only reason was that the US charges them in one form or another, so they reciprocate. I hadn't budgeted for the expense, so I had to limit myself to only three steak/wine dinners per week... poor me.
