Hi All. It would be interesting if people posted photos or stories of big fish caught on classic [Boston Whaler boats]. By big fish I mean any nice, memorable fish, trophies, a nice Striper, Salmon, Halibut, Tuna, Shark, Marlin, Yellowtail, Kingfish, or Mahi and even the ones that got away. I would and I hope others would enjoy a read and photos of people's fishing experiences on Classic [Boston Whaler boats]. Cheers--Dom |

I have heard of Lee Wulff's exploits via this site, catching tuna w..a..y back, + I have seen some photos on here eg. WT's tuna, would be interesting to see more memorable photos/stories/anecdotes from any keen anglers.. Cheers, Dom |

Classic Montauks only? Talk about catch limits - ha. Good idea but I Request that you open the thread to the wider range of stories that may be told and memorable pictures that may be shared; I'd like to see a few 13s and 15s strutting their stuff. 16 foot Menemshas anyone? I'd like to see the Ugly Duck at work too. I imagine there could be some BIG fish caught by our CW sisters and brethren on little Boston Whaler boats not much bigger than the fish itself (there really is something to be said about the lateral stability of all these smaller BW vessels) - I suggest opening the post to any classic fish caught on classic Whalers (and compare it to classic pics of fish caught on post-classic Whalers?) - or how about simply Big Fish caught on Little Whalers? Thanks, |

Is a 96' montauk considered classic? We have hooked several large sailfish while fishing for dolphin, one of them right next to the boat. Got a few up to the boat but none in the boat, we had the wrong tackle. When one of those things jumps next to the boat it sounds like someone just did a cannonball off the bow, impressive splash! When you have the wrong tackle they can spool you quick and there's nothing you can do to get them in, short of waiting hours for them to get tired. We're not that patient or cruel, they would probably die if you exhaust them that much. Also hooked a few sharks (black tips and spinners) near shore. I will dig for those pictures. We did not want them in the boat with us so we cut them off! |

Well my best halibut stories come from being stationed with the USCG in Kodiak from 1989-1992 and fishing from my 1982 Montauk with 90 hp Evinrude. 1. Landed a 160-pound halibut. Then, 20-minutes later I hooked a BIGGER one with the same rod and couldn't turn it as it swam away, could feel the tail pumping as it cruised away, stripping line as it went (should have cast off the anchor with a marker and followed the fish, calm day, but didn't think about it at the time). As the spool got lower and lower I kept tightening the drag to try to slow the halibut, but to no avail. The swivel at the hook/sinker finally failed. A week later somebody caught a 400+ pounder in the area... must have been my fish. The fish didn't quite fit in the bed of a pickup truck - over 8' long and over 4' wide. The local paper carried the picture & story of the guy who caught it. 2. Fishing with Tamira (wife) and she landed two 86-pound halibut in 6 minutes (well landed the first then hooked the second in 6 minutes). The I hooked an even bigger one (of course it was bigger) and mis-gaffed it alongside (was only lip hooked). We headed back in as 172-pounds of halibut in the boat was enough. JimP |

I think I have lost more bigger fish then I have landed in the old Montauk. Got so frustrating I sold the boat. Its the boats fault for sure. Joking aside my Dad did catch a 40 pound Tyee Salmon in our old Montauk will post a photo if I can find it. Martyn |

Skinnywater (Max) - good idea, more universal - will try to make new post re Big (Memorable) Fish.... Buckda - that pike is an awesome piece of nature ! And yeah how about let's broaden the thread so it appeals to more... Weekendwarrior - I personlally would consider a '96 a Classic due to the hull shape, even if there's no mahogany or teak. Jimp - I would love to get a halibut one day - we dont get'em here in Oz, so I guess I'll have to get up there someday....

Back in the mid eightys, sorry no pictures(who had cameras back then) While a member of the Cape Coral Fl. Tarpon Hunters Club, I used to catch 100+ lb. tarpon from my previous 13 ft. Whaler. I would use the Whaler when tarpon fishing the inside bay from Sanibel Island. I would use my 25' Bertram when fishing for tarpon offshore from Sanibel. When fishing with the 13 footer I would rig a release anchor, and let the fish pull the boat around while I reeled. Actually I found the fish would tire out faster when pulling the Whaler than when anchored with the Bertram. Damn, they were the good old days. Thanks for jogging my memory. I can`t even catch a stinking sea trout in the Gulf in Central Fl. BTW we released all our tarpon, they are not good to eat and slimy as hell (make a mess of your boat.) |

Pretty much anytime of the summer season, you can head down to the keys around the bridges (best after Marathon Key) and hook a Hammerhead BIGGER than your 13 whaler. Its nothing to see the tail fin stick out of the water taller than the engine on the rear of your boat. I have some old 35mm pictures of some of the large hammerheads. If you do not believe me got to you tube and search for hammerheads on the 7 mile bridge, there are a couple of good videos of them being caught and tearing up anglers fishing for tarpon... |

49 pound Chinook salmon caught casting Jim Bedford spinners from the bank on Tillamook Bay using 12 lb Maxima line and no chance of landing it. There were a ton of boats out there trolling, we just stopped and cast from the bank for the heck of it and whaaaa whooom Fish On! I did my best to control the fish but as line spooled off the reel a couple of the boat guys were watching so I started yelling "Boat! I need a boat!" and these dudes picked me up in a jet sled, I stood in the boat and reeled up chasing the fish until they could net this fresh from the ocean big Chinook. Way cool. I'll look for the pictures. My first big Pacific fish. |

After getting pinched a few times, you learn to be quick when grabbing them. Believe me, it really hurts when they do the grabbing. I lost a fingernail a few years ago from getting pinched. Real big ones like this little guy could probably break fingers. This was one of the largest I have caught. It was just under 15 pounds. Lobster can get as large as 40 pounds. When I found this guy, I thought he was pushing that weight as he looked absolutely enormous underwater. This one is not typical however; most are less than 2 pounds. Time to shake down the fishing and scuba gear! So where are the pictures of all those large salmon and abalone that we always hear about from you West Coast people? How about some big striper pictures from the East Coast? Lets keep this thread going. Time to back up the bragging with a picture or two. |

A school of nice yellowtail on the prowl at an Orange County kelp bed. A nice grouper shot in Mexico by my friend Brian. A big grouper or two is part of every diver's learning curve. Back in the eighty's while of member of the Cape Coral Tarpon Hunters, I would often use the 1966 13 footer I had at the time for tarpon fishing in the bays around Sanibel Island. I caught several, most in the 100+ range, and the boat actually made a pretty good tarpon boat. I would cut the anchor loose on a buoy when I hooked up, and the fish would tow the boat around while fighting the fish. They would tire more easily then when I was fishing for them from my 25 Bertram. Only thing is I only fished single handed from the Whaler, and only used one rod, not the multiple four to six rods in rod holders with the reel brake on method we used to use on most other boats, so there were less hookups. We never boated any tarpon either as were the club rules, so dealing with them on board the boat was not a problem. Never thought of taking pictures at the time though. |

Well fine, I'm baited. Here are a few cell phone picks of the late Puget Sound Aug catch. Hard to see the BW details, but it's a Montauk with OEM steel tanks. Most are silvers (Coho) and humpies (Pink) which tend to be the middle and smaller size of the species (~12-3 lbs is the size range shown). With the Montauk, I tend to fish interior waters where wild kings (Chinook) must be released (hatchery can be kept). (In general I try and release larger kings when possible. I would hate to see our fish stock get to the point where they close the fishery.) I did get a good picture of a wild 30lb I released on a nice bright day. All others fish pics are on the ocean in non-whalers...so those have to what another day... 2011 was probably my best ever fishing year. Here is a sampling of my catches this year. Sorry the 255 lb bluefin was not caught on my 20 Outrage but I am still proud of her. http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/jmorgan40/2011%20Fish/iphone131. jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/jmorgan40/2011%20Fish/iphone205. jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/jmorgan40/2011%20Fish/iphone208. jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/jmorgan40/2011%20Fish/iphone297. jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/jmorgan40/2011%20Fish/iphone320. jpg http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c366/jmorgan40/2011%20Fish/iphone321. jpg |

The season has started and have been lucky to get out 4 times this week and bagged out all 4 times with roaches like these. Big on in the corner was 3.2kg. |

http://i1086.photobucket.com/albums/j447/Dauntless_14_TX/Fish/black_drum.jpg This is a Black Drum I caught from my Dauntless 14 this past spring. Wife and I were just enjoying being out on the water, when it hit. Weren't really fishing. 18 min later I had it in the boat, measured 39" long and a hair over 41 lbs. Kicker was, rod was spooled with 10lb test and the swivel I was using fell apart due to rust right after I got it in the boat. |

Last year the Fisheries Department increased the minimum size and bag numbers and it seems to have paid off. This year the season has really opened with a bang with crays everywhere and large ones too. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b176/alheng/ 2011%20New%20Season%20Crays/IMG_0400.jpg |

alfred: Nice bugs, they look just like the ones here in Fla. (little darker and the shell has bumps) wonder if they taste the same. I heard one time it takes a good two years for a Lobster (Fla. Crayfish) to reach adult hood and be a nice size. I understand that there are some people that make a living from lobstering but I wish the season would be closed every other year to give them a chance to reproduce and have a little more protection. |

Alfred. Just love those crayfish. Looking like a real fun time getting them. Did you grab them by hand or used a convenient trap? |

Contender - the season here is from 15 Nov till 30 June. Bag limit is 6 per diver per day or 12 per boat regardless of the number of divers. Egres - by hand and or a cray loop - sort of a short stick with a loop at the end, you place the loop from the back of the cray and pull it tight. Alot of the time we just use the loop to tickle the cray till we can reach them and grab them by hand. |

Nice bugs Alfred! How much does the big one weigh? They changed the regulations back here in MA last year; I can't take the real big ones like the one above anymore. |

The bigger one was about 3kg. We can only take the big ones if they are male. Max size for females is 105mm from between the horns to the back of the carapace. Minimum carapace size is 76mm. Females showing any signs of breeding, hair, tar spots or carrying berries, must not be taken at all. Maximum possession limit per license is 24 crays. On the whole it's a tightly managed fishery and the limits are well within reason. |

alfred: Almost the exact laws that we have, 6 bugs per person max 24 in the boat, measurement is 3.5 inches between the horns to the end of the hard shell, no females with eggs, season Aug. 1st to March 31. Some counties in the state the rules may vary a little, but you do not want to be caught doing anything illegal with them. Very stiff fines and sometimes jail. I have heard of people losing their boats, and tow vehicles for pouching...Take care |
