Huge Great White spotted off Martha's Vineyard - what does this have to do with Whalers? Well, the story does reference a Whale carcass and the boat departed from Menemsha Harbor.... Other than that, just an item of interest because some of our fellow Whaler enthusiasts do ply these waters in boats smaller than this monster is reported (approx. 20 ft). Time for adventure - ... I'll wait here for the pictures. ^@^ |

I just see the whole story title in the full link - pretty humorous; apparently "attacks" equates with "circled and nudged" without taking a bite as per the repeated eyewitness testimony contained in the story itself... |

Much of the water scenes in the original Jaws movie were filmed off of Martha's Vineyard, and the crews used a fleet of Outrage 21's. How's that for the Whaler connection? |

I got to see lots of great whites up close on a cage diving trip in South Africa recently. The crew on the boat threw fake (some kind of foam or rubber, I think) seal heads in the water and then reeled them in. The sharks went crazy, biting them, following them, and thrashing around. Definitely a cool experience and worth doing if you get the chance. Compared to the Orca whales that frequent my home waters, the sharks were much more aggressive and agile, although but way smaller. Incidentally, I was reading a book (The Wave by Susan Casey, also recommended) a few weeks later and one of the chapters discussed a shark cage diving boat sinking in the same waters I had just been in, leaving all the crew and guests swimming in shark infested waters. Now there's a place that the unsinkablity of a Whaler would really be nice! |

20Dauntless is right! I had the privilege of cage diving for a week with the Great Whites a few years back at Isla Guadelupe (where the National Geographic series [i}"Sharkmen"[/i] is filmed). One of the most incredible experiences of my life! To see these perfect apex predators up close allows you to see them in a different light. While I love to fish, I just can't watch Sharkmen because it angers me to see these amazing animals treated this way in the name of research. When I was a kid, my parents had a summer home on the East End of Long Island, and we would occasionally see these guys close to shore at the beach, but usually only a massive fin breaking the water. Frank Mundus would haul in his "monsters" to Montauk Point for all to see, and the annual shark tournament was always amazing. I'm glad some things have changed, but I still love a good Mako steak! -k |
