Went to the little park/beach at the north end of the Dana Point harbor today for a family gathering. Wish I could have brought my Alert or classic Sport 13, but the wife had business with the car that involved leaving it at the airport, so a boat would have been out of line. I did do some standup paddle and kayaking and lots of boat watching. Observations:
1)LOTs of outboards were quiet, smoke-free four-strokes. When I finally saw a smoky old 2-stroke, it was VERY noticeable... shockingly so. But just as quickly, I got used to it and realized that it doesn't bother me in the least. I guess I'm one of those who is genetically wired to like them.

2) There were LOTs of classic Whalers, mostly 13's, a handful of 15's, and at least a couple of 17's as harbor utility boats, looking like crap, baking in the sun with no protection. They all had new'ish motors so they were definitely working-boats, and the motors were almost all 9.9's on the 13's and 15's and a 15hp on the 17/Montauks. One of the Montauks was even the desireable, smirked model. I guess as long as they don't have holes in the deck to get waterlogged, they could last forever. Sad to see them looking so rough, but glad to see them earning their keep.

3) I had a moment... no sooner do I finally have a 17 Alert, (Montauk), than I felt a twinge of desire for a classic Outrage. I'd never felt it before... Hope it passes without any serious consequences to my wallet. :)

yep, I know the feeling well. Really nice Classic Whalers are scarce as hen's teeth out West, where the climate allows us to use our boats most of the year.

I looked two years for a nice 18 Outrage and then found a nice Montauk. I coveted Tony's (elaelap) 18 for years but he sold it while I was away on a trip.

After that experience I decided next time I want a Classic in beautiful condition I need to take a month in the fall and drive to Wisconsin, Michigan, and other midwest stated and comb all the Craigslist sites and boatyards.,

Sean (Irishcreamer) who lives out here found a beautiful 18 Outrage back there recently. Lucky guy.

I bought my Dauntless 15 in Dana Point harbor from a guy that used it as a work boat to clean yachts.... Nice place!

That's pretty much how I found my Hydrostream Viper. Wife on a business trip in Minneapolis. I went with her and found the boat on boat trader online, rented a car, and went to check it out. Found a really great shipper to bring it back to socal, and now she's mine :)
