Hi All,

I thought frequency of boat useage might be an intersting topic.

In my experience - People Too Rarely Use Their Boats !

1. I used to go boating (approx. 10 yrs ago)every Sat. & Sunday in summer time, offshore, weather permitting..loved it...fresh fish on the BBQ (now a Weber Q220). I had a great crew then etc...

2. In winter I would still go out once every second week - with the same crew.

3. Now I don't get to go so often - once every few months - for various reasons (crew overseas/family/married now etc..)

In Australia many boat owners HARDLY EVER use their boats.

I would love to increase my boat usage - to get back to say once a weekend in summer, once every 2nd week in winter.....and plan to do so.....

I believe boats are to be used........

Dom I live in FL and I totally agree. I repowered my Revenge 5 years ago and have about 160 hours on it and maybe another 100 hours on my 13 in that time frame so 260 hours is roughly 50 hours a year which sucks.

Nick, Don't you work? That alone cuts into your boat time!
Retirement is great.

Every other week for me.
I work a 9/80 schedule with every other Friday off. Friday is a great day to go because the ramp and marina are empty and I have Saturday and Sunday to recover....

I probably average every third week... and I'm only 4 blocks from the marina here in Santa Barbara. Lately, I've put more time into other things and haven't even gone that frequently. Then again, I've also gone twice in the same day. So it all averages out.

I definitely agree about the bigger PITA factor of a big boat, causing less frequent outings. One of the things I considered when choosing a Montauk was that very thing. I felt it was as big as I could tolerate, and still be able to pick up and launch on a whim. To that end, it's bigger than I thought. :(

Its been over 6 years from the last launching of my Montauk,,Changing work days and the move never left anytime to gear up,,The Montauk is still shrink wrapped and sitting in the woods for at least 2 more years

When I'm home I take my boat out to the lake and bum around on it every Saturday and will only put 2 to 3 hours on the main motor max because we're always making stops to fish or just hang out on a sandbar or cove. Then I take my jet ski out and i put 5-6 hours on it on the same lake because we keep moving on that more. Course the lake is only 5,000 acres so your pretty limited on where you can go. I imagine making offshore runs or having access to larger body of water you can rack up a lot more hours in a day. I know last time I took my boat to Destin, FL we put about 6 hours on it just exploring the area.

I have gone from 13 ft Whalers to 25ft Parkers and back to 16 ft Whalers, with stops in between. I used the smaller boats more than the larger boats.

I also noticed that the older my kids got, the less they wanted to go out on the boat. That is just life. Now I have teenagers, and a whole crop of nieces and nephews who are small, who can't wait to come to my house because of potential boat rides. This is why I have the Revenge now.

Put 980 hours on my Ribside in 3 years, as the kids grew so did their need for more boat the new to us 25 Revenge has seen 53 hours so far this season(kids still in school).Generally we boat every weekend rain or shine with a few week nights seeing short fishing trips. At 8 and 10 years old I'm still blessed with their willingness to go. The area waters have just about seen the last of us for another season so it's up on the trailer we go next weekend off to points unknown.

When I was in high school and college (60's-70's) we were in the boat 3-4 times a week, (caused me to drop out of college) We would leave in the morning and be gone all day. Have no way of telling how many hours we put on our boats, we had two boats to our use and would trade them off. I remember once early in the morning the water(Ocean) was so flat calm we just looked at each other and each of us were thinking the same thing "Bimini" so we went. Now older and slower its not only harder to get out but I also wait for perfect weather, I would have to say 1-2 times every two-three weeks, and once again in different boats. Two weeks ago I was in the keys on my buddies boat, 25 Sea Craft, last week took a cruise (family) on the New Disney Dream, next week down to the keys again using the Sea Craft again...

I have a 2005 130 Sport which I bought new and it has 300 hours on it.

I also have a 2006 220 Dauntless which I bought new and it has 710 hours on it.

I put more hours on the bigger boat because when I use it, it is usually an all day trip.

For over six years I used to lived on the water, but that was twenty years ago. I averaged about six hours a day on the water during the summer weekends and about half that in spring and fall. I probably was out every third week day weather permitting. Since I had access to Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River (MI), a good portion was driving around or waterskiing on those wonderful waterways. However, much of that time was spent anchored in order to swim or fish.

Since I still don't have my newly purchased classic 15' BW put together yet, I am not yet sure of our actual usage. The goal is to use it our small lake when we are at our cottage and also trailer it around to the many lakes in the greater Traverse City area (MI). My wife and I love to explore the waterways in our kayaks and they get used almost every day. With my wife's parents, two sons and now a grandson, the BW will give us a much greater opportunity to spend time with the family on the water touring, tubing and fishing. My guess is that the Whaler will be used almost every day we are at the cottage, weather permitting.
