whaler131	posted 07-04-2011 10:36 AM ET (US)         I have a few ropes that are still in great shape [but are stiff]. How [can stiff rope be] made pliable again?
jimh	posted 07-04-2011 10:46 AM ET (US)             Soak stiff ropes in bucket of freshwater and detergent. Agitate them. Rinse thoroughly. If the ropes are kinked, unwind them and tow them (carefully) behind the boat in freshwater for a bit.

Dave Sutton	posted 07-04-2011 09:45 PM ET (US)             "tow them (carefully) behind the boat in freshwater for a bit" Or if that fails, try saltwater... ;-) Towing clothes in a mesh bag behind a sailboat etc. in saltwater is a well known way to clean and soften fabric. Salt was used for years as a cleaning agent.. try it. Rinse in freshwater after, if desired. Dave .
Powergroove803	posted 07-05-2011 08:50 AM ET (US)             You can also put them in a mesh bag and run them thru the washing machine. After sailing in the ocean we often do this with a little detergent and a little fabric softener.
